Senate Committee Approves Bill For McDonald Observatory Work
The Senate State Affairs Committee approved a bill authorizing an expanded McDonald Observatory program funded in part by 300000 from the University of Texas. The plan includes a new Doctor of Astronomy degree and a joint UT Chicago department operating the Yerkes Observatory and McDonald, with a Chile site likely later. UT would spend 240000 of its funds on campus housing and campus improvements, while federal grants are sought for infrared microwave facilities. The proposal reflects a three-way project with expansion of facilities and new astronomical work.
