National full page four color advertisements for Big Bend National Park will appear in five major national magazines. Proof of the first ad, sponsored by Sinclair Oil, was received by Park Superintendent George W. Miller. The copy extols desert beauty and the park’s resilience in arid conditions.

Mrs. James L Sublett 86 longtime Brewster County resident died Saturday night at her daughter’s home in Alpine A pioneer who with her husband operated Rancho Estelle an irrigated farm near Santa Elena Canyon they later lost land when Big Bend National Park was created Funeral services were held Monday at the Livingston Funeral Chapel in Alpine with pallbearers and numerous out of town relatives noted She is survived by four children two of whom reside in Alpine and 13 great grandchildren
Brewster County offices award Treanor Equipment a No 12 Caterpillar motor grader for Precinct 2 after a trade-in, net 16500. Border Machinery Co. El Paso nets 9700 for an H Vough Payloader. Comm Court approves a motor grader for Precinct 1 at 13000 and two Chevrolet sedans for the sheriff at 1385 each with trade-ins.
Funeral services for Mrs J B Buck of Denton who died Tuesday morning March 3 were held last week. She was sister of Roy Whiteside Myrtle Whiteside and Mrs G H Storey all of Alpine and aunt of J C Cooley of Alpine and Hoyle Cooley of Marfa. Several relatives attended.
The Carpenter Addition was annexed Monday night adding 53 lots covering 1.4 acres. The action followed petitions from owners including Harry W. Carpenter and others. Streets June Avenue Derry Lane and Antelope Drive were dedicated to the city. New homes costing $14,500 to $2.00 are expected to be built soon.
Federal Aviation Agency expected to award Kokernot and Stillwell the contract to rebuild Elephant Mountain access road south of Alpine. Road serves the VHF UHF air ground facility atop the mountain used by pilots within 100 miles to reach El Paso. Work will include check dams caliche rip rap after prior damage from heavy rains. Final approval anticipated in a few days.
A reader asks about the first three water wells on the South Hill north face of A Mountain. The wells were sealed in permanent concrete houses and later abandoned. The piece notes the first well, found by Dr B F Berkeley during his mayoralty, was drilled 175 feet and produced 60 to 75 gallons per minute. Mayor Lockhart says one daily trip ensures driver safety as Casner Motor Co mechanics prep the truck. Werner Hollis leads the project with Jose Chavez Saturnino Natera and City staff assisting. City Secretary Lee Cowell will supervise in Del Rio during initial days. Water Supt. Bill John and others assist after pipe movement begins.
The 136 mile stretch from Terlingua to Lajitas was completed this week per County Commissioner Rex Ivey. Some loose gravel remains and motorists are urged to travel with care. Hugh McMillan Co. of El Paso built the road for 201,919 dollars, eliminating many curves.
The Post Office Department invites bids on a Sanderson to El Paso star route mail truck service with daily round trip. Bids due April 22 in Fort Worth. trip covers 614 miles round trip. Truck departs El Paso 10:15 PM MST and arrives Sanderson 7:30 AM CST, returns 1:00 PM CST to El Paso 9:00 PM MST with all en route stops.
Dr Tom Coats will become resident of the Alpine Rotary Club next July succeeding Jim Jancois. Other officers named at last Thursday noon meeting were Glenn Davis secretary and Charlie Hunter treasurer, both re elected, with Joe Baxter Clanton New bill Red Pattillo and Ray Morrow as directors. Francois will automatically become vice president.
Rotary members are urged to attend today’s meeting at the Country Club. A photograph of the entire club will be taken by Charlie Hunter, the first in about 15 years.
Initial tests in the Sunny Glen field show potential for another productive water well. The Gardner home private well pumped 140 gallons per minute, with a city agreement to pump 1000 gallons this year and possible city connection after a 30 day test.
The Alpine Cowboys report 134 season seats sold after a brisk week of sales led by the Chamber of Commerce committee. Thirteen firms and individuals purchased tickets for the team’s first pro season in Fort Davis and Marathon, with strong community enthusiasm noted.
Alpine officials request details on dug wells and permission to fill such wells to remove a safety hazard. Mayor W. E. Lockhart notes many wells are unreliable and pose a danger to children, urging cooperation for safe site construction where possible.
County and city crews joined to lay new sidewalks on the east side of the Chamber of Commerce building this week. Dr. B F Berkeley asked the City Commission to fund 33 feet of sidewalk at two dollars per foot, noting prior County approval to extend the walk from the east entrance to the alley.
City Commission named W. H. Tar Terry Jr. Ray LaBeff John Richard Whiteside Keith Morrow and Neville Haynes to a board of equalization. The panel will meet April 13 and remain in session until all city properties are evaluated. T. B. Davis was appointed to handle the 1958 audit of the city's books.
Construction at Camp Mitre Peak between Alpine and Fort Davis progresses under C W Burdette with donated materials from West Texas firms. Junior Gray leads the crew as Martin and Lemmon of Andrews design the lodge 96 feet long to double capacity for 150 girls per camping period. Foundation is finished and floors pour this week as native rock walls rise. Funds come from Girl Scout cookie sales.
City of Alpine offered Southern Pacific $250 for a 16 600 gallon steel water storage tank to be moved to the Lune Glen water field if the railroad furnishes a crane. Mayor W E Lockhart said the neck trailer could haul only the walls because the concrete bottom has no value.
In a justice of the peace court last week two men pleaded guilty to petty theft. Sheriff Jim Skinner and Deputy R.A. Webber arrested them between Alpine and Maria after Dave Pool reported stolen tractor tools. The tools were recovered and the pair fined $10 plus costs totaling $29.50.
Drilling continued this week northeast of Hovey in sand formations. The activity involves two wildcat tests as operators push forward with exploratory boreholes.
