Central PTA Seeks Meat For Community Barbecue

Central PTA officials seek meat donations for a community barbecue at Kokernot Lodge scheduled for noon on Saturday April 2. Proceeds fund a sprinkler system for the Central campus. Student County Government Program Termed Big Success

Alpine High School wraps up its county government program with a simulated court trial led by Judge-elect Ton a’e. Scientists Gather for Alpine AAAS Meeting at Sul Ross

More than 100 members of the American Association for the Advancement of Science head to Alpine and Sul Ross State College for the South Western and Rocky Mountain Division conference in early May. Delegates come from Texas and ten other states for the event and the dedication of the new Science Building. Organizers include President Bryan Wildenthal and Dr. Barton H. Waock with faculty committees preparing exhibits and field trips to accompany lectures by regional science authorities.

Army Exhibit to Visit Alvine This Saturday

The Fourth U S Army mobile exhibit tours five posts and will be in Alvine from 9 a m to 12 noon Saturday March 12. Located across from City Hall on West Holland Street it features photo murals and models. Army recruiters will explain the Choose It For Yourself program and available specialized fields.

Night In New York Theme Promised For Sal Ross Show

Preparations are in full swing for the Annual Band Varie Show titled A Night in New York to be held at 8 p.m. Friday, March 11 in the Sal Ross Auditorium. Dr. Elton Miles leads set design with Mary Jo Sohl and Bandmaster Leland Schultz coordinating program and scheduling. The cast includes Mary Miller as the brooding backwoods scene leader, Mike Nelon the newsboy, David Forchheimer the roaming reporter, Boyd Armstrong the theatrical producer, and Burdette as his assistant. Zeke Rivera will MC the Cuban Nite Club scene as the beatniks and ballet entertain. A lively varied program ranges from Central Park to showier spots and promises something for everyone.

Stroms Buy Western Auto Store From McBride in Pecos

Mr and Mrs Bob Strom of Pecos have purchased the Western Auto Associates Store from HW J McBride who has operated it over two years. They assumed active operation Monday and plan improvements including new shelves and store redecorating. Merchandise includes tools fishing gear sporting goods auto accessories radios and major appliances. Mrs Strom previously worked with Western Auto for 14 years starting in San Angelo. The Stroms have two children Ann and Glynn and reside at 808 N 1st St. McBride will remain in Alpine and stay linked to Motel Bien Venido and Financial Industrial Fund.

Roberts Water Pact Amended in Alpine Contract Changes

City of Alpine amends water agreement with Mrs. Oscar Roberts to a 250000 gallon monthly limit, limits pumping from Roberts well to protect city supply, and shifts annual water rights payments to October. Proposed land purchases and equipment rents discussed, including a 50 GPM well and a $1000 ripper option, with city officials and residents present.

Alpine School Board Reviews Awards And Bus Repairs

Alpine school board discussed sports music and literary awards and bus repairs including a surplus bus purchase. Supt Peyton Cain authorized buying from surplus and repairs costing up to 125 dollars. A policy for jacket and letter awards was approved, with two sports earning 15 dollar jackets and one sport 13.50 dollars.

City installed two stop signs on 7th Street and two on 8th Street along Avenue D after deliberation. Mayor W E Lockhart said residents long requested the stops to aid fire engine movement and curb east west traffic.

Two Grass Fires Reported Near College Grounds

Lupine Volunteer Fire Department battled two grass fires in the morning. One blaze burned near the college yard on Tack Street, the other at Jackson Field.
