Alpine hosts the West Texas forum of Student Councils at Sul Ross College tomorrow with about 200 delegates from districts including Sweetwater Sonora Iraan San Angelo Ballinger Fort Stockton Big Spring Midland Andrews Kermit Colorado City Alpine Eldorado. Forum officers from Big Spring Sweetwater Eldorado Fort Stockton lead the event with a 9 am start and a campus dance at 8 pm.

New Water Well To Be Deepened At John F Lane Ranch
City officials will deepen a newly drilled water well near the John F Lane ranch on the south edge of town after a test produced only 50 gallons per minute. J W Gillett announced the plan Wednesday. The well reached 330 feet before testing and another well may be drilled in the same area.
Legion oratorical contest to be held in Alpine
W B Dorris announced eliminations for the 16th district will be held Friday March 5 at 3 pm in Alpine High school auditorium. Sally Conn Fabens High won by default. Regional contest is set for today at 3 pm in Sun Ross auditorium with Sally Conn Lawrence R Smith Doyle Carson and Ray Briley Johnson named as district winners.

Alpine Justice of the Peace Garnett Dies at 52
Raymond Clarence Garnett longtime Brewster county justice of the peace for Prec. 1 died at his Alpine home after a two month illness. Born September 28 1901 he served since 1938 and was active in local peace officer circles. He leaves a widow Ruth Smith a son Cpl Ray Garnett and a brother Walter. Funeral was held at the Presbyterian church with county officials and peace officers as pallbearers. Interment followed in Elm Grove cemetery.

Alpine Youth Killed in Highway Wreck north of Presidio
Joe Dudley Thompson 19 and companion Pat O Neil were in a car that left U S Highway 67 six miles north of Presidio. Thompson died instantly. O Neil suffered a broken arm and dislocated shoulder. Both were St Marys University students visiting Alpine. Funeral services held in Alpine with burial at Elm Grove cemetery.

Alpine Boy Takes Reserve Champion Calf at Odessa Show
Don Burleson of Alpine 4 H Club showed the reserve champion calf bred by H L Kokernot Jr of Alpine at the Sand Hills Hereford and Quarter Horse show in Odessa last week. He has won grand champion titles in prior events and now holds six grand championships, plus multiple top placings across recent shows.

E McElroy Dies Of Heart Attack In Alpine Ranch
Earl C. McElroy a prominent Brewster county ranchman died of a heart attack at his Alpine area ranch while brand ing calves. Born November 4, 1893 in Toyah he married Nellie Gourley May 14, 1925 and operated the Nine Points and Jim P. Wilson ranches. Funeral services were held at his Alpine home with ministers officiating. Surviving are his widow a mother two sisters and four brothers along with other relatives.

The Plymouth Oil Co test well on the H L Kokernot ranch in Jeff Davis county lies about two miles east of the Kokernot headquarters rather than 13 miles north of Fort Davis as previously reported. The well is roughly 24 miles north of Alpine.

The jury failed to reach a verdict in a damage suit filed by G. C. Holladay and G. C. Holladay Jr. against J. W. Gilmer of Alpine over a San Vicente Rio Grande share farming contract. Judge Roy Jackson presided as Judge J. C. Epperson recused. Lawyers included Hart Johnson and Alfred E. Creigh for plaintiffs and Will Morris and H. O. Metcalfe for defendant.

Final ten mile section of Highway 118 begun
Paving started this Wednesday on the last 10 mile stretch of State Highway 118 between Alpine and the west park entrance. The 60 mile Alpine south section and the lower 10 miles from Study Butte north are already paved. The new route will shorten the Alpine to park entrance trip by about nine miles and work will then proceed on the remaining 74 mile gap to park headquarters and the Basin. An entirely new grade will be built from Todd Hill to the west.
