Fluorspar ore valued at over 300000 dollars was shipped by rail from Brewster County during 1954. A total of 12429 tons from mines in Northern Mexico were shipped by Southern Pacific to markets in the East. Stephan Riess of Simi California arrives in Alpine to choose a site for a new water well. He previously inspected the area two weeks ago at the invitation of Mayor Hugh White and the City Commission and found the topography favorable for a potential water supply.
Martha Ann Gearhart of Valentine will exhibit a lightweight Hereford steer at the Sand Hills Hereford and Quarter Horse Show in Odessa on March 9. Frank Newsom, Brewster Fort Davis counties agent, will attend. About 10 lambs from the area will also be shown. The Odessa show opens with a parade at 3 p.m. March 9, with nightly performances and finals on March 13. The event is the official 1958 state show by the Texas Hereford Association, with points toward the Lone Star Register of Merit and recognition by the American Hereford Association including cash awards. A free cutting horse show runs all day March 9, with a $1,300 prize pool. The new Ector County Coliseum hosts the indoor world championship codec events each night, featuring stock from Beutler Brothers.
Alpine youth leader Mrs. F S Breshears writes to the Brews ter County Grand Jury defending youth welfare and condemning the labeling of most teens as delinquents. She asserts 98 percent of Alpine teens are interested in community welfare and details her long service with local organizations.
Deputy District Governor Roy A. Minear of Midland announced his candidacy for governor of Dist. 2-T-2 and spoke of work for the Lions Crippled Children's Camp at Kerrville during a Alpine Lions Club meeting. The club set next week’s regular meeting for the Centennial School cafeteria amid Texas Education Week observances. Mrs. Robert Peterson sung numbers with Mrs. Hallie Veale at the piano.
Texas experienced a notable feat as Southwestern Bell crews stringed a line through a 6,000 foot high gap on Pulliam Mountain. The project, necessitated by difficult terrain, earned Burt Beckett the nickname Honorary Telephone Foreman in Charge of Male Power. A feature story is planned in SW Bell’s publication. Also, Schreiner Institute cadet Herbert B. Pruett Jr. was commissioned as a second lieutenant in ROTC.

Gov Allan Whivers designates Texas Education Week for March 7 to 13 to acquaint the public with school programs and achievements. Alpine Schools observe with Orientation night at Alpine High Auditorium at 7 30 pm, awarding $25 to the class bringing most adults. Alpine Board of Trustees panels discuss educational plans.
A. N. Shadix announces a stainless steel 20 by 26 foot diner to be built on East Holland Ave adjoined by Elliott's lot. The ready built structure from Valentine Diner Co. of Wichita Kansas will include a kitchen two rest rooms seven booths and ten counter stools. Shadix, with years in restaurant operations, recently sold an Odessa cafe and moved here with his family. The project aims for a late April opening and features school linked community activities and education week programs with films and tours for patrons.
Alpine Rotary Club hosted a Lad Night dinner at the Holland Hotel with 92 Rotarians ex Rotarians and guests as part of Rotary’s Golden Anniversary. L B Starns of El Paso gave a history of the Alpine club founded in 1923. awards were given to charter members J W Gentry and Shirley Scales and district governor’s honors to Dr Joel Wright. Dennis Brown chaired the Golden Anniversary committee and led the event with table decorations and a 50 birthday cake.
Hardy of Fort Worth regional director of the U S Weather Bureau recommends establishing a cooperative weather station at Sul Ross State College Alpine to begin by April 1 1955. The unit would distribute reports under Sul Ross College Station Alpine Texas and boost local publicity. The prior wartime station at Sul Ross operated during World War II and the Marfa Alpine airport office has since closed.
A religious week begins Monday at 10 a m in the Sul Ross State College auditorium with Dr C B Casey as program chairman. Each day features a college assembly at 10 a m and visiting ministers speak at their churches in Alpine in the evenings. The retreat concludes next Thursday at Paisano Encampment. Ministers include Rev Thomas B Granger from Georgetown Methodist Church, Rev W Donald Harris of Central Presbyterian, Rex Ryker of Abilene Christian College, Rev Ross Calvin Coggins of Woodson First Baptist and Dr Glenn Routt of Texas Christian University.
Census data for Alpine Schools shows a drop to 1085 students for the 1955 56 year, the lowest in a decade. Superintendent Peyton Cain notes the decline costs the Alpine Independent School District about 5168 dollars, averaging 68 dollars per missing pupil, with Latin American and Anglo American groups detailed in past and present counts.
J T Anderson, 74, noted Cisco oil man and father of Mrs Paul Vogt of Alpine, died in Cisco after several months illness. Funeral services were held in Cisco Tuesday. Mrs Vogt had visited his bedside. Mr and Mrs Vogt and children had not yet returned home. Mrs Jack Williams and her two children are visiting her mother in Sweetwater for a week.
