Sul Ross State College announces six new faculty members joining education and science departments for the 1961 fall semester. Notables include Col Forbes and Welker in science, McBryde in biology, and Drs Ford and Graham in education, with Van Orden as associate. The hires follow military and civilian careers spanning NASA, Navy, and higher education.
Dr Earl Bryant Miller aged 77 longtime educator died Saturday in the Holland Hotel here The body was flown to Montpelier Indiana for burial Born November 27 1894 in Clinton County Indiana he taught in Richmond Indiana and for 29 years in Houston He is survived by his wife one son and three grandchildren
In the Sophomore League Alpine Cowboys add six new players and reassign six others as second half begins. Newcomers include Robert Guindon of West Roxbury Massachusetts and Stew Mac Donald of Seattle Washington. The club also lists two on the disabled list and prep for series with Albuquerque Hobbs and Artesia across June to July.
A 7 year old Kansas boy was left behind at an Alpine filling station when his parents and grandparents drove off in separate cars en route to Big Bend National Park. Brewster County Rescue Squad found him about 65 miles south on State Highway 118 and reunited him with his group. Radio support came from the Texas Highway Patrol US Border Patrol and US Park Service Rangers.
The educator holds a Master of Fine Arts from Cornell University and studied at Crouse College of Fine Arts, Cleveland Institute of Art, The Art Students League, Cooper Union, and with Ralph M. Pearson. He has shown works across the country and illustrated Hester & Nunn's History of Texas. He taught at Illinois Wesleyan and Ohio State, and for six years was associate professor at Pan American University in Edinburg. Mr and Mrs Van Orden with two sons will relocate to Alpine in August.
Ken Moyer of Alpine is a member of the company in Twelfth Night to be presented July 11 13 by the University of Texas drama department.
Herman Ledbetter of Marfa and Thad Corkins of Alpine were elected to WTCC posts at the District 6 7 and 8 organizational meeting in Odessa. Ledbetter becomes District 8 vice president. Corkins takes over as director from Alpine. Hugh White resigns from the board citing vague future plans.
Dan Ritter and Jack Hord of Alpine won the second annual Alpine Country Club low-ball event with a 27 hole score of 101. Jerry Jenkins and Ray Golden of Pecos were second at 102, with Ledbetter and Archer topping the first flight at 105. Other results include LaBeff Corkins 106 and Brown Hutchins 122 in the later flights.
Hard showers drenched Alpine yesterday afternoon as the city logged .14 inch on Tuesday and .52 inch by 3 pm yesterday. The June total rose to 5.01 inches and the annual total to 8.39 inches in a notably wet month.
J C Burk Construction Co of San Angelo won the Administration Visitor Con contract for a new building at Panther Junction in Big Bend National Park. The low bid was 228 091 dollars for a 300 day project. The 11 750 square foot facility will house park offices a visitor center seven exhibits and a 196 person hall with kitchenette.
Little League American Legion and Ft. Davis remained unbeaten through June 27, with the Legion winning 12-5 over Forchheimer's on June 23 and Ft. Davis defeating Forchheimer's 10-4 on June 27. First National Bank topped Adams-Francois 12-3. On Thursday June 29 Morrison's meets Legion at 6 30 p.m. and Forchheimer's faces Bank at 8 p.m.
Epimenio Tercero Portillo 55 was fatally struck by a west bound Southern Pacific freight train near the Dairy Queen at Alpine Creek. The engineer notified Alpine depot and a search followed. Inquest by Justice of the Peace Jim Parker noted Portillo born July 26 1906 in Ojinaga Mexico. He leaves his widow four sons Gus Adan Arturo and four daughters Alicia among them all of Alpine. Funeral services were pending at Livingston Funeral Home.
Don C. Littleton, noted Baptist lay and civic figure from Alpine, died Tuesday June 27 in a local hospital. Survivors include his wife Norilla, five sisters, two brothers, and many nieces and nephews. He served as a deacon, trustee, Sunday School superintendent, and led multiple church and community projects. The mayor urged all businesses to close June 30 from 1 to 3 pm in his honor, with a siren at 1 pm.
T G Woodward installed as worshipful master of Alpine Masonic Lodge at a called meeting. He succeeds James A Boyd who served in that role for a year. About 30 Masons attended as Jeff M Graham and Chas W Livingston led the installation and Dr Noble B Armstrong spoke of overseas service and lodge visits.
Hugh Wire of the Alpine Area Development Committee and Herman Ledbetter of the Highland Chamber will visit El Paso on Friday June 30 to place two billboards marking highway routes to Big Bend National Park. The effort, funded by local pledges, totals nearly $2,000 with a few gifts outstanding. Thad Corkins commends the drive and pledged funds will be used solely for tourism.
Li tleton longtime Alpine community figure and past president of the Alpine Rotary Club, led multiple groups including the Yucca Council Boy Scouts and Alpine Masonic bodies. Funeral services by Roy Akers in San Antonio will be Friday at 2 p.m. at First Baptist Alpine with burial at Marfa Cemetery.
T A Devore assumes the Alpine Safeway store manager post coming from Midland where he led a Safeway for seven years. He has eight years with Safeway total, plans to reside in Alpine with wife and child, and invites locals to visit. He replaces Verdis Pack, now at Odessa Safeway. Pack managed Alpine for twenty one months since September 1959. Also noted is a Houston family visit to Mr and Mrs J W Gentry Jr and their baby daughter.
