Alpine Receives 9 Day Rain Totals At 4.03 Inches
Rainfall in Alpine over June 13 to 17 totaled 4.03 inches according to The Avalanche records. Tuesday 0.76, Wednesday 0.06, and the remaining days contributed 3.21 inches. June totals reach 4.35 inches, a June record since 1944, with prior all time high for June 5.71 and overall monthly high 31.45 inches in 1941. Yearly total stands at 7.73 inches versus 4.10 inches at this point in 1960.

Alma Collins 66 longtime Alpine restaurant and hotel cook died Sunday at her home. Born and raised in Alpine, her stepfather ran a burro-pulled taxi after her grandfather operated it in 1907. She cooked at the Holland Hotel and for J. Y. Walker at the Texas Cafe for nine years. Survived by a California niece. Funeral services pending at Livingston's.

A record field is expected for the Alpine Country Club second annual low-ball tournament on June 24 25 with $1000 in golf merchandise awarded across multiple flights runners up and winning partners. A low team score prize plus a $10 entry includes buffet supper pool access and temporary membership. The 4241st USAR Anti Aircraft Detachment gains 1st Lt. Tommy L. Hailey of Marfa as its eighth commanding officer. Hailey, wife Mary J Hailey, will run Marfa High School vocational home making program in 1961 62. The unit traces its leadership from Capt. Albert Logan to Capt. Bedford Cain and others, with designation changes over the years.

Funeral services were held for Mrs. Charles B. Cox at the First Methodist Church with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. She died from injuries after a Saturday crash on U S Highway 67 between Marfa and Presidio. Survivors include four daughters and three sons.

Janis Ellyn French daughter of Mr and Mrs Warren French of Alpine has been elected state treasurer at the American Legion Auxiliary Bluebonnet Girl State in Austin This is the highest state office an Alpine girl has held while at Girls State She was an honor student yell leader and active at Alpine High School She was the Federalist candidate for state treasurer and was sponsored by American Legion Auxiliary Unit No 79 with Marylyn Briggs.

R. C. Withers Laid To Rest
Funeral services for Robert C. Withers 91 were held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Fort Davis with Rev. L A Sublett and helpers from nearby churches. Burial followed in Hillcrest Cemetery. A longtime Fort Davis resident, he came from Jasper County 36 years ago and worked as a teacher and later organized a mutual aid insurance company. Survivors include son Casey Withers of Beaumont and several nephews and grand-nephews. His other son, Robert, was killed in World War II air service.
