The Alpine Avalanche column editor taunts Mountain Peeks rival Barry Scobee while praising a new reader Eddie Witwer who renews his subscription. The piece notes 41 readers, a joke about a baby weighing 28 pounds, barber shop quips, and an idle tale about a clothesline lightning strike.
Alpine officials announced two day Community Day celebrations for August 8 and 9 with free dances free barbecue and other attractions. Tar Terry Jr leads rodeo promotions promising a bigger show with seating capacity more than doubled and top West Texas and New Mexico riders and ropers expected to participate.
Dr. C. E. Sperry head of Sul Ross biology will speak on Why Conserve Native Vegetation during the conservation lecture course in the Sul Ross summer session. The public is invited to attend daily from 11 to 12:18 with a week of topics including plants and recreation and youth crime prevention.
A teacher institute and workshop titled Understanding of the police and program of Parent-Teacher Association will be held July 8 and 9 at Sul Row sponsored by the Texas Congress of Parents and Teachers. Marie A Wenendorff of Richmond will lecture. John P Manning chairs the council. Joint sessions with the N Y A will occur in room 222 on both days, with opportunities for conferences for teachers superintendents and club women in Alpine and nearby areas.
A correction notes that the baby’s parents are Mr and Mrs John Matthews rather than Mr and Mrs Tom Matthews. In a separate incident a Sioux City man fired three revolver shots at himself but used blank cartridges indicating no injury occurred.
A West Texas ranch in the Beach Mountains was leased to an El Paso company that will not run domestic sheep or goats on the property. The move would give bighorn sheep two to three years of relief from competition, aiding a population under 14,000 in the U.S. The piece notes concerns about fences and encroachment, with bighorns currently in 12 Western states and facing habitat threats. Also mentioned are ranchman Charlie Burnam injured by a horse and Winder of Kelverd on turning 100, who has smoked the same pipe for 80 years.
Mrs. W. J. McIntyre a longtime Brewster County resident and member of a prominent family died at her East College Avenue home after a long illness. Born May 1 1861 in Mississippi she moved with her family to Texas as a child and lived in Schulenberg Alpine and Mari Thon before settling in Alpine in 1916. Survived by sons Vernon and Wells and other relatives, services planned on the last page.
FORT DAVIS June 25 Road building plans by the Fourth of July rush order for four miles of the Davis Mountains State park highway beyond the Pine miles now under construction to carry the road west of the Davis range. L. E. Wood, local highway resident engineer, in charge of laying out the stretch, is noted for his work on the Alpine Fort Davis route and the Davis Mountains loop.
A large turnout was expected for a joint installation of officers for the Alpine Fort Davis Van Horn and Marfa lodges at the Kennedy ranch north west of Alpine. Claude L. Austin was to install and speak. Alpine lodge officers were elected last week and to be installed with names including C A Gilley and Douglas McMurrey. Fort Davis and Jett Davis lodges also planned public installations with officers listed. Also noted were census farm value and woodpecker species facts from the era.
An election to fill the late U S Senator Morris Sheppard seat was set for tomorrow with mild interest. Absentee voting lagged, only 15 absentee votes recorded by Wednesday night as county officials prepared polling places and staff. Leading candidates in Brewster County were Johnson, Mann, and O Danial, in that order, while poll taxes paid totaled 695 this year.
County selective service chairman M Moorman announced volunteer registrars will assist in registering 21 year olds since Oct 16 1840. All men 21 by July 1 1941 must register with registrants reporting early. about 65 eligible in the county.
The Red Cross First Aid course opened at the courthouse last night amid high interest. Classes will run through next week on Tuesday Wednesday and Friday at 7 o clock. Sponsors include the local Red Cross chapter the American Legion and Auxiliary. An enrollment goal of 106 is set. Dr Joel Wright Rotary International governor attended the Estancia New Mexico charter program for the new Rotary club on Wednesday night.
June 25 in Fort Davis. Forty eight professional Trappers of Trans-Pecos, led by H N Elliott of the US Biological Survey, report 886 coyotes and 310 bobcats trapped in January March across nine counties west of the Pecos river. Barbecue day featured veal goat and 100 pounds of catfish as families camped nearby.
Alpine post office and bank reported defense bond and stamp sales totaling $6042.15 in net cost figures to date. Most sales occurred in May after the program began.
City taxes for 1941 are due July 1 and become delinquent after Oct 1. City Tax Collector M H Moorman advised taxpayers this week. A penalty of 10 percent and 0.5 percent per month interest plus $1 per year cent will be added after Sept 0. Notices are being mailed as property owners are urged to pay promptly.
A record enrollment was reported at the girls camp opening at Paisano encampment grounds Tuesday with 238 attendees from far-West Texas churches. The event, four years old, shows enrollment nearly four times 1938. The girls camp ends today and the boys camp starts next Monday through July 3. Rev M M Fulmer of Uvalde is business manager for both encampments.
