Fort Worth saw the Will Rogers Memorial auditorium crowded for the Fort Worth premiere of color Big Bend country films by Fisherman Jack Lamb. The Texas Garden Clubs and Fort Worth Garden Clubs sponsored the show featuring hunting, fishing, desert flora, and river views with scenes of Terlingua adobe cottages, ranches, rangers, and the Rio Grande border.
The San Angelo insurance man and financier has long promoted Big Bend development as a national resort. He aided trips into the area and helped push the legislative program that secured 1.5 million dollars for land purchase. The National Park Service plans to take over the land once bought. Much land is held by non residents, so title checks may be slow, Meadows said.
About 175 boys enrolled at the Paisano camp this week while the girls camp, which closed last weekend, held around 395. The combined enrollment for both camps reached roughly 500, over 100 above last year. The boys camp began Monday and ended last night. Sponsors are the Baptist Woman's Missionary Union of this district.
Ranchman Joe Parker reports sale of 1750 head of lambs at six dollars each in Glass area. The sale, through Joe Graham, marks one of the highest prices this year and tops last year's by about one dollar. Parker ships 900 head today from Hovey.
Lyndon B. Johnson wins Brewster county special election to succeed Morris Sheppard with 245 votes to Mann 83. Daniel 75 and Dies 69 follow. total 477 valid ballots cast. County precinct results listed.
Officers elected by Alpine chapter No. 398, Royal Arch Masons, recently, will be installed next Thursday night. High priest M. F. Merrell presides with king Carl W. Shull, scribe John Clanton, treasurer R. A. Whiteside, guard F. E. Weyerts, secretary R. J. Ratliff.
Jarvis Robinson known as Slue was installed as president for six months at the Alpine 20-30 club meeting held Tuesday noon. Bill Winter was named vice-president and Ralph Wise re-elected secretary-treasurer. Other officers include Bill Allen sergeant at arms Wally Davis board chairman and directors Frank Matthews Lloyd Henderson Ralph Wise M C Hollinshead Ray La Belt.
Fifty three are enrolled in the Red Cross Pint Ald course with 88 total signed. The program started here yesterday and benefits are reported. Two others are interested and urged to enroll. Classes will be held Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday nights at the courthouse next week, aiming to double enrollment before the school closes.
Heavy rains continue in Big Bend and Davis mountains with Alpine reporting 2.96 inches since last Saturday. Weekend rainfall included 1.26 inches starting Saturday night, 1.21 inches Monday, and 0.49 inches Wednesday, boosting June total to 8.71 inches and yearly total to 16.31 inches. A joint Masonic installation at Pete Kennedy ranch was rained out but later held indoors in Alpine with officers from Alpine Fort Davis Marfa and Van Horn lodges installed.
Governor O'Daniel signed the measure Wednesday appropriating one and a half million dollars to purchase land for addition to the proposed Big Bend National Park in southern Brewster County.
Alpine officials and clubs met at the Methodist church to discuss organizing a four‑area community recreation program. Plans include a city recreation association at Sul Ross gym, new parks near the swimming pool and south of the railroad, a supervised recreation hall for youth, and a playground for small children. Activities cover indoors and outdoors with various sports and games.
Community meeting in Alpine discusses Alpine’s two day Aug 8 9 observance featuring a parade at 10 30 a m inviting clubs and merchants. Free water carnival dances barbecue and a two day rodeo led by Tar Terry with nominal charges. Committees named for barbecue parade dances salad cake serving food supply and finance.
The Deeie ranch oil test four and a half miles northwest of Marathon was spudded last Thursday by Chester Dewey. Casing was set and cemented at 40 feet with a rotary drill. Interest grows among oil men nationwide due to the Maratha Basin’s structural value. Humble Oil and Refining Co holds leases on about 60,000 acres nearby. The public may visit to view operations on Sec 45 UA GCASF. William Larson was fined $200 for liquor violations.
Fort Davis reports a new contract for a seven mile section of the Davis Mountains highway system extending from Kent on U S Highway 90 in Culberson County into Jeff Davis County. The plan calls for about 17 more miles to connect with the Davis Mountains State Parks highway at Nunn Hill. Holland Page of Austin is the apparent low bidder, with plans prepared by A J Adcock, resident highway engineer at Van Horn, who mapped the original route.
The fiscal year ending June 30 reports post office receipts of $21,447.77, up $814.16 from the prior 12 months. Mrs Annie K Turner, postmaster, notes about four percent increase and quarterly receipts all higher than the preceding year. A second Well Baby conference at the community center, led by county nurse Miss Fullerod with assistants, drew nine mothers with babies and two toddlers.

Last weekend construction started on a five room frame stucco residence for Mr and Mrs W Y Henson located just north of North. The design includes a built in garage and modern features. C E Treadwell of Marathon Alpine is the contractor. Mr Henson serves as local agent for the Railway Express Agency.
J Cavender 65, long time county resident and recent Alpine dweller, died Wednesday morning at his home after years of ill health. Funeral services were held at Livingston Funeral Home chapel yesterday at 1 o clock, with Rev M M Fulmer officiating. Burial was in Elm Grove Cemetery.
