About 65 Brester County young men who will reach their 18th birthday by July 1 are expected to register for selective service. The estimate, based on last October's 75 percent turnout, uses the 65 figure from local draft board chair M. H. Moorman. Men away from home will register with the board in their temporary location. The softball season opened in Alpine Tuesday night with a game between the 20 30 team and a picked group. Four teams have entered the league and will play several games in the coming days. A rule change ensures all who care to play will get an opportunity and every eligible player should participate. Three Brewster Men Called for Training This Month
Three Brewster county men were named in the selective service call this week. Harvey Henry Latch of Marathon and Micario Zobos of Alpine left Monday for Fort Bliss for final examination. Al Farmer volunteered and is now in training at Randolph Field, San Antonio. These three men filled Brewster county's June quota.

A heavy Wednesday downpour drenched the Alpine area with 1.23 inches in under an hour. Streets flooded, water covered parts of Little Mexico, and highway runoff disrupted traffic for hours. Rain patterns extended across town and county following another earlier storm. June totals reach 3.04 inches with past week rains.

Mullenix Dies From Auto Crash West of Del Rio
Mrs J T Mullenix Sr 56 a former Alpine resident died Sunday morning in a Del Rio hospital from injuries in a crash on U S highway 90 about 25 miles west of Del Rio. The car she drove overturned after a rear tire blew out killing her. several others survived. Mullenix and husband were well known in Alpine. Funeral held at the Christian church with many local friends attending. Interment Elm Grove cemetery. Pallbearers listed, survivors include brother Devine Portales N M and niece Lona Cook Alpine.

Topping Road to Observatory Completed Last Week
FORT DAVIS June 18 Black topping of the state highway from Fort Davis to the McDonald observatory was completed last week. Its easy curves and hill slopes now offer a smooth route to Mount Locke and the mountain scenery. A finished dirt road goes 14.1 miles beyond the observatory to Nunn hill. From there another unit of the Davis Mountains State park highway is under construction for a dinance of nine male with four miles more being provided for.

Union Church Service Sunday Night Marked By Good Attendance
The union service at the Baptist church Sunday evening drew strong attendance. Rev. Ray McGrew of the Methodist church delivered the sermon, with Rev. E. B. Isaacks of the Christian church presiding. A choir from four participating churches sang under Mrs. Bill Winter. The union meetings will continue through summer. Isaacks will lead next service unless the Baptist church secures a pastor, in which case the new pastor will preach.
