Davis Mountains feature celebrated in Humble Way issue

Cloudburst Floods Alpine and Snowlike Hail Mark Weather Event

A major cloudburst swept Alpine and the Big Bend last Monday with north winds and heavy rain. Alpine Creek washed a red pickup off a street crossing. occupants escaped unharmed as streets flooded and water entered East Holland area businesses. City officials consider flood control measures and bulldozer use. weather stations recorded up to .88 inches Sunday and .87 inches Monday with numerous ranch measurements across the region.

City Engineer John Stovell Dies at 71 in Alpine

John Stovell longtime city engineer and secretary for Alpine died of a heart attack in Brewster County Memorial Hospital. He was 71 and laid to rest at Elm Grove Cemetery after services at First Presbyterian Church. He helped engineer work for the Marfa Alpine Army Air Base and served Alpine Rotary Club. He is survived by his wife three sons and seven grandchildren.

Hunter Safety Course Meet Called Friday

An NRA hunter safety course for junior members of the Big Bend Sportsman's Club will be set up at a 4 pm meeting Friday in the Chamber of Commerce building. Parents with children are urged to attend to help launch the program with instructors Sanford DeVoll and Wot Fielder.

Marfa team defeated Alpine 7-2 Tuesday night in Marfa in the summer league opener. The teams are set to meet again later today for a rematch.

Pat McKinney laid to rest in Marathon church service

Funeral services were held for Pat Clay ton McKinney at the First Methodist Church in Marathon. He died Monday of a heart attack at his Willoughby Rosillas ranch home, where he had lived eight years. Born November 14, 1912 in Marathon, he lived in the area all his life. He married Vera Gullihur on September 7, 1929. He served as a river rider on the Rio Grande during quarantine days and worked as a government trapper in the Brewster area for eight years. Survivors include his widow, two sons Billie Pat of Fort Stockton and Clayton of Marathon, two daughters Mrs. Raymond Stewart of Amarillo and Mrs. Ted Henderson of Marathon, his mother Mrs. Earl McKinney, and five brothers Ray, Ned, Ora, Sou, and Tommie. Burial was in Marathon Cemetery under Livingston Funeral Home.

Jose Aranda Killed In Accident Near Alpine

Jose Aranda, 73, died in a two vehicle crash about 20 miles south of Alpine on Highway 118. He lived in Alpine over 50 years, worked at the Holland Hotel 12 years, and is survived by his widow Tomasa Aranda and son Jose Angel. Funeral plans are pending. Patricio Aranda Cobos, driver of the Chevrolet, is jailed on DWI charges. Manuel Hernandez, the other passenger, is also being held.

Mayor Denies 10000 Pool Offer In Alpine

Mayor W. F. Lockhart said the city did not offer anyone ten thousand dollars for a swimming pool after a radio report claimed Cas Edwards received such an offer.

Pioneer Ranch Woman Kate Nevill Dies in Brewster County

Mrs. Kate Griffith Nevill 83 pioneer ranch woman of Brewster County died Saturday in San Angelo. Funeral services were held Tuesday at First Baptist Church Alpine with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. She came to Brewster County in 1899 and managed Nevill Ranch after her husband Robert L. Nevill died in 1914. Survivors include two daughters a sister a grandson two great grandsons and many relatives. Pallbearers listed.

Graves Accepts Coaching Job

B C Graves of Temple will accept the head football coaching position at Sul Ross State College. He remains under Veterans' Administration contract through June 30. Graves previously coached at Sul Ross from 194 to 19. He will earn a doctor’s degree at the University of Texas after summer session.
