City secretary manager appointment eyed for Monday vote
The City Commission plans to name a new secretary manager at its July 7 meeting to replace the late John Stowell. Mayor W. E. Lockhart urged qualified applicants to apply by Monday night. Lee Cowell of El Paso and Glenn Burgess are among those mentioned. Burgess says he is not seeking the job. Mrs. Loma Skevington has been acting city secretary since Stowell's death.

Rains Boost Alpine Water Level in Brewster County
Heavy June rains raised the Alpine water level by about 1.85 feet at a Carpenter well north of Kokernot Field. Glenn Audsley of the U S Geological Survey notes a rise from 41.5 feet below ground on April 16 1955 to 40.5 feet today and cites a historical range between 38 and 43 feet since 1955.

Mayor W E Lockhart proposed Cas Edwards Park at Block 27 with two conditions: the city operates it as a public park and names it Cas Edwards Park, with payment of 100 dollars a month for 100 months. Brewster Polio Funds Exhausted Restock From National HQ
Brewster County Chapter of the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis has exhausted local polio funds and received a $650 check from national headquarters. The money will aid local patients with hospital and medical bills and rehabilitation for older cases. Five polio patients are currently helped locally and the chairwoman urged residents to begin the Salk vaccination series.

City officials delayed the $65,000 water system improvement bond vote because the original notice in The Avalanche had a defective line of print. Bond attorneys advised reissuing the notice and rescheduling the election to July 22 to allow publication on Page 5A. Funds would buy pipe and fittings for larger city water mains in four major areas.

Trans-Texas Airways cuts Alpine-Marfa to El Paso flying time to 1 hour 2 minutes with its maximized Super Starliners. The Houston carrier claims fastest local service status and notes 200 aerodynamic changes cost about a third of a million dollars. RA Camp At Paisano Draws Record Crowd
About 370 persons attend the Royal Ambassador camp at Paisano Baptist Encampment this week the largest in Paisano history. The group includes 326 boys ages 9 to 16, 33 counselors and 11 staff.
