City To Hold Water Bend Election July 8

Heavy rains in the Big Bend and Davis Mountains brought 3 to 3 inches of moisture over two days. Alpine reports roof damage at Hinson Store and flooded drains at Alpine High School while bridges prove inadequate due to runoff. Multiple ranches logged rainfall amounts from .25 to 3 inches with scattered damage and city plans to fix channels and replace bridges.

Gully Cowsert Laid To Rest In West Texas

Captain Gully Cowsert a longtime Texas Ranger and West Texas rancher was laid to rest in Junction after a June 11 death in Austin. Born 1896 in Kerrville he led Company E the West Texas District from Junction for 14 years and later retired January 1 to run family ranches with his son K. Survived by widow two sons a daughter sister and four granddaughters.

Milwaukee Baseball School Opens Today

How Bond Money Will Be Spent

City officials detail a $65 000 bond issue aimed at upgrading water lines. Bien Venido Motel Plans Formal Opening

Brice Resigns to Return to Yale for PhD

Rev Gene Brice resigns as pastor of First Christian Church Alpine effective Aug 19 to resume work on his PhD at Yale University. He will lead his last services Aug 17 and, with his wife and 17 month old son Mark, plan to depart Sept 15 for Connecticut for a two year program. A pulpit committee led by Dr Bevington Reed will select a successor. Brice began as minister in 1955 and has served as Alpine Lions Club director and Little League commissioner.

Alpine Tourist Information Tent Set Up on Highway 90

Fred Jack and the Alpine Chamber of Commerce tourist committee erected a tourist information tent at the east entrance to Alpine on U S Highway 90. A municipal finance report shows Alpine's total debt at 50.5 percent of assets, down from 70.5 percent in 1937. Assets rose to 910,250 while annual income grew to 183,000. future debt projections and debt-to-income ratios through 1963-70 are outlined, with no recommendation on projects.

Park Tunnel and Road Project Bids Due June 27

Bids will be opened Friday June 27 on a 750000 dollar Big Bend National Park road and tunnel project. Water Main Improvements To Be Issued In Alpine Bond Election

Alpine voters will decide on July 8 whether to issue 65,000 in water works system improvement bonds. The city commission approved the election to fund a replacement 6 inch Sunny Glenn pipeline with 8 inch pipe to raise capacity from 375 to 575 gallons per minute and improve fire protection across the distribution system.
