Marathon Citizens to Hold Fort Pena July Fourth Picnic

Scrap Rubber Totals Near 50 000 Pounds in Brewster County

Brewster County Tops War Bond Sales Again
Brewster County exceeded its war bond and stamp sales targets this month, with county chairman G. W. Baines reporting just over $9,000 up to date. He noted June’s $8,900 quota and May’s $11,800 that was more than doubled by $27,907 after final tallies. The July quota is $24,500, and Baines hopes residents will rally to meet or exceed it.

Sul Ross to Offer Pre Flying Courses for Teachers
Sul Ross College has approval to offer pre flying courses for secondary school teachers in the air instruction movement next fall. The second six weeks schedule is being coordinated with the ground school. Any secondary teacher may enroll. reimbursement is available only to those who plan to teach the new work in high school. Textbooks provided at no cost. Courses include Meteorology Navigation Civil Air Regulations Aircraft Interaction Radio Code and a general course for teachers on organizing high school courses. Professors Gilley and Coleman are licensed instructors. W. J. Smith will teach Ed 439 and Radio Code as coordinator.

Alpine Men Escape After Culvert Crash Near Fort Hancock
Fenxacnaughy, mi Al Douglass Cas ner Motor Co miraculously escaped serious injury Friday night after their car veered off the highway west of Fort Hancock struck a culvert abutment and rolled several times. Mr McGaughy walked away unscathed while Douglass had a slight shoulder injury and scrapes. The 1910 Chevrolet belonging to McGaughy was wrecked beyond repair. The men said they were returning from a business trip to El Paso and McGaughy may have dozed at the wheel. No insurance was carried on the auto.

City Delves Deeper For Water As Well Reaches 1531 Feet
Drilling resumed at the city water well on the southeast edge after 8 inch casing reached 1531 feet in Edwards lime formation. Mayor L Starns said geologists expect water to be struck and the hole may extend to 2000 feet to test the location. For months there is no water shortage in Alpine as the nearby wells supply the town.

Alpine FFA Wins At State Meeting
Alpine FFA was named one of Texas’s two best chapters at the state FFA convention in New Braunfels. The chapter earned the Golden Emblem for a year’s program of work centered on a 200k scrapbook submitted as proof of achievements. Representing Texas in October at the National FFA convention in Kansas City will be Alpine along with Sulphur Springs. The CapeS eal chapter also presented a well balanced program featuring about 40 completed items under Supervised Practice Cooperative Activities Community Service Scholarship Leadership Activities Conduct of Meetings Earnings and Savings and Recreational Activities. Scrapbook was carried by R. C. Mitchell and Keesey Kimball. Keesey served on the state Livestock Improvement committee.

Fifth Selective Service Registration Set for June 30 in Brewster County
About 275 young men aged 18 to 20 in Brewster County are to register next Tuesday, June 30, between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m., at their local boards. Registrants born between January 1, 1922 and June 30, 1924 must register, provide correct addresses, and may choose which residence to record as their domicile. General J.
