Brewster County Prepares for June 30 Registration

Alpine post office announces new federal auto use stamps on sale replacing the $2.09 stickers. The stamps bear a serial number and a form on the reverse for car details. Registration for the fifth selective service act will occur Tuesday June 30 with locations in Alpine Marathon Terlingua Sa Vicente and clerical support from local assistants.

Local Oil Dealer Buys Large Transport Truck

Newell Oil company buys a large gasoline transport tanker to relieve East Coast gas lines. W. J. Newell says purchase completed in San Antonio and tanker driven to Alpine. Tank carries 4 055 gallons, operates 24 hours daily from Sweetwater refinery to Alpine Pecos and Fort Stockton bulk plants.

Pastor Attends Fellows Pastors' School for Weeks

Ray B. McGrew, pastor of M, will attend a pastors' school for several weeks, leaving the church to attend the program and return with new training for ministry.

One Democrat ballot shows few candidates in several districts

For the first time in years only one candidate will appear on the Democratic primary ballots for numerous district county and precinct offices after the filing deadline. In district races R E Thomason faces Louis A Fail while Chief Justice Samuel K Wasan faces P R Price. Incumbent Calvin Huffman and Metcalfe are unopposed. Frasier also unopposed. County officials Slight Patterson Frazer Hord Sandifer have no opposition.

Griffin Speaks at Alpine Men's Fellowship Meeting

The Alpine Men s Fellowship club met Tuesday at the Presbyterian church with 55 men attending a meal prepared by Bob Hamilton Pat Paterson and Judge Griffin Seldon Robinson who presided Ed Fraser chaired the program and introduced Judge Griffin whose talk was America in War and Peace Plans were made for a Ladies night at the July meeting the second Tuesday will be an outdoor event.

Red Cross Nutrition and Home Nursing Courses at Sul Ross

Sul Ross college offers Red Cross Nutrition and Home Nursing courses in July and August. Nutrition meets July 21 to August 1, 3:30 to 5:30, room 219, home economics, with Miss Male Bennett. Home Nursing follows. times to be announced. Open to all. cost is 85 cents for the Nutrition textbook. Registrations due by early July. Accidental Death Details Of Ft Davis Youth In Royal Air Force

Royce Norval Coleman of Valentine died March 11 in England when a bomber crew crashed after fog prevented a safe landing. He had raced to Canada to join RAF after attempting US service and later flew for Canada before serving with the RAF. His body was buried in Old England amid local mourning for the educated lively flyer.

June Bond Sales Boost County Total to $5200

County chairman G W Baines reports that War Bond and stamp sales in the past week raise June’s total to $5190. Of this, $4500 were bonds with the rest stamps. The June quota is 38900 and officials hope the remainder will be sold before month’s end. Bonds and stamps may be bought at banks or post offices.

Rains and Heat Drag On in Alpine Highland Area

Unusual California type heat wave persists in the Alpine region as showers and rains occur in the Highland country. Sul Ross college gauge records .77 inch on Sunday and raises June total to 4.93 inches with daily amounts for June listed. Range conditions are good but more rain is needed to cool the air and revive grass and weeds.

Vocational Agriculture Summer Program Announced by Alpine Instructor

R C Mitchell, Alpine Vocational Agriculture teacher, outlines a year round program tied to defense production. Plans cover June 5 to July 13 including charter scrapbook, state FFA convention, livestock and garden projects, and supervision of boys in the Food For Freedom drive. Continued on last page.

Alpine Citizens Register Overwhelming Victory For Flying School Bonds

Alpine residents gave strong support to a flying school bond issue as McGaughy received notice of his appointment as first lieutenant in military police and ordered to report to Fort Sam Houston on June 25. McGaughy, Alpine city commissioner for eight years and longtime Casner Motor Co manager, will be replaced around July 1 by an as yet unnamed successor, while remaining in Alpine. Another commissioner, J W Gillett, already volunteered for service earlier.

Fi Davis Boy A Former Sul Ross Student Missing On Bataan

Fort Davis June 17 Myrrl McBride a foxhole fighter in Bataan is listed as missing in action. His parents Mr and Mrs J E McBride of Port Davis now Beeler Kansas received a War Department notice after the war began. McBride graduated local high school and attended Sul Ross College Alpine for two years then studied at University of New Mexico before entering service in the New Mexico coast guard anti air craft regiment. Scrap Rubber Drive Draws Big Response in South Texas

About 20 000 pounds of scrap rubber were delivered to filling stations in Brewster County as residents donated or sold at one cent per pound, per government guidance. W. Ik. Carucage of La Harmonia plantation sent in over 2500 pounds, with tires from trucks stored there for years. Alpine Boy Scouts will collect more scrap rubber in a community campaign.

Two Ballots Cast Against Flying School Bond Issue in Alpine

Alpine taxpayers showed strong support for a flying school project voting 205 in favor and only 2 against the $10,000 land purchase bond. Nearly half of eligible voters participated, and funds will be shared among Alpine Marfa and Presidio County for site land. Contracts for electrical and street lighting awarded. power, phone lines extended. possible new plant unit cited. An FSA employment office may open in Alpine by July 1.

Texas Big Bend Park films shown to Sheppard Field men

Several hundred enlisted at Sheppard Field viewed color films of Texas Big Bend Park at the Servicemen's club. The presentation, arranged by the Texas Big Bend Park association and Amon Carter, highlighted the 800,000 acre area planned as an international playground and tourist magnet in Brewster County along the Rio Grande.
