Alpine High School hosted the Alpine School Board and Supt Peyton Cain for his final board meeting Tuesday night. They conducted routine business as Cain wraps up his tenure.
Alpine figures keep the cavalry legacy alive with Bill Smithers’ articles and a display of a Napoleoni era muzzle loader at Bob Strom’s store. Local board notes cover school finances, transfers, salaries, and the pending June payroll as Supt. Cain schedules a two week vacation while Supt. Frost prepares to assume control.
Deputy Textbook Custodian M. P. Slover sent 1000 pounds of recalled textbooks to the state depository. He said textbooks for the 1960 61 school year would be in Alpine in August.
Alpine Area Development Committee reports nearly $2000 raised with one day left to fund billboards an area brochure and a tourist clinic. Hugh White says no business refused direct outreach praising town pride and planned investments. Similar drives in Marfa Marathon Ft. Davis and Sanderson push regional totals toward 3500 to 4000 with support from state and national agencies.
Tuesday night triple header washed out and a rescheduled start attempted. Upcoming games include Forchheimer's vs Adams & Francois and Morrison's vs Fort Davis and American Legion vs Bank with matches set June 15 to June 20 across Fort Davis Bank Adams Francois Morrison's Legion and Forchheimers.
All Methodist students of Sul Ross State College and those with Methodist preference are invited to a picnic at Kokernot Lodge at 7 p.m. Thursday June 22. The First Methodist Church of Alpine will host the event.
The Ints improved to 8-1 with an 8-1 win over the Van Horn Stars and a 32 victory against the Marfa Indians at Kokernot Field. Jerry Brunelle struck out 10 while allowing 3 hits against Van Horn, and Elisio Hernandez and Jesus Valenzuela each had 3 hits. Valenzuela hit a triple. Vicky Hernandez limited the Indians to 4 hits as Alpine bats led by Gaga Llanez and Ramiro Jaime produced ten hits.
Dennis Reiners of Clara Minnesota a Sul Ross State College freshman last year plays a part in Edna Ferbers Cimarron opening a five day run at the Lobo Drive in here Sunday He appears as a United States cavalryman in the Oklahoma land rush scenes Reiner was on the Sul Ross Rodeo Team last season placing high in intercollegiate competition He plans to return to Sul Ross next September.
Alpine Cowboys, still in second in the Sophomore League, begin a nine day home stand at Kokernot Field this Saturday June 17. They face Artesia June 17 18 and 19 before a key series with league leader Hobbs June 20 21 and 22 with a doubleheader set for June 22. The team then hosts June 23 24 and 25. Five players were injured in a collision near Pyote delaying the squad’s travel. ground crew details and outcomes follow.
Registrations begin at 1 p m Friday for the Lucky Father event hosted by the Retail Merchants Committee of the Chamber of Commerce. A drawing will name the Lucky Father who will receive 100 in gift certificates, with two runners up getting 50 each. Winners announced Friday evening at the event.
Alpine Public Schools spent 3080.50 on scientific equipment in the 1960 61 school year under the National Defense Education Act. The Texas Education Agency will provide a 1540.25 subsidy in this phase, to be received before August 31.
At the Alpine Garden Club request Brewster County will place at least three benches on the courthouse lawn for tourists. Mrs. Leroy Stone spoke for the club, which will help pick bench types. There was a payroll cut as County Agent Billy Hill’s salary drops from 2300 to 1900 annually effective July 1, while travel expense remains 1000. The court also canvassed the May 27 U.S. Senate runoff results with Blakley at 301 and Tower at 346 votes, accepted the resignation of hospital board member James Crawford who is moving to El Paso, approved T. B. Davis 1960 audit, and set the equalization hearing for 9 a.m. Monday June 17 after rescheduling from June 13.
Rain fell across the Big Bend Davis Mountains area yesterday bringing moisture to ranch lands lawns and gardens. Alpine readings ranged from .4 to 1.2 inches with totals for June 13 at 4.14 inches per D M Bennett records and a 3.38 total through May.
General Manager Forrest Walker announced three personnel moves at Casner Motor Co. Bernal Slight shifts from service to new car customer relations. Bill Gardner becomes service manager while attending a GMC school in El Paso. M. D. Edwards becomes parts manager after a 1940 start in Casner's and a Pecos assignment. Edwards and his wife reside at 1903 N. 4th St with three children Timmy Terry and Mrs. Clifford Adkins of Pecos.
Melvin Middleton was re elected grand knight of Alpine Council 5696 Knights of Columbus at a Monday night meeting in the Parish Hall. Other officers named include Frank Valenzuela deputy grand knight Rodolfo Valenzuela chancellor Willie Uranga Jr recorder W K Johnson warden Kenneth J VanderMuelen treasurer and Dr A M Rochester advocate. Trustees elected were Manuel Fierro John Pabst and Pete Gallego. The council, instituted March 5, now has 38 members and meets on the second and fourth Mondays at 7 30 p m at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church. Officers begin their term in July.
D W Perkins announced the opening of Perkins Plumbing Co at 602 W Holland. He and his wife moved from Crane and have three married daughters in Wickett San Angelo and Crane. They belong to the Christian Church.
Betty Vogt daughter of Mr and Mrs Paul Vogt Alpine was elected to the State Fair Musicals chorus in Dallas from 150 applicants ten girls chosen She has sung with Dallas Civic Chorus and will join Civic Opera Chorus next fall She is SMU graduate taught in Dallas elementary school Mrs Vogt attended The Song of Norway with Mildred Armstrong daughter of Dr and Mrs Noble Armstrong also re elected to the chorus Nassau
Mr and Mrs Herb Harlow and Mr and Mrs Kenneth Stucke plan to attend the International Lions convention in Atlantic City New Jersey from June 21 to 24. Harlow is president of the Alpine club and Stucke serves as district governor. They will depart Friday and visit New York City before Atlantic City.
The Catholic Mothers Club hosts a Mexican dinner at the Catholic Parish Hall on Saturday June 17 starting at 5 PM. Besides the meal there will be cake coffee hot dogs popcorn balls and cakes. Games begin at 7 PM. Everyone is invited.
