An 102 year old man known as Elisio Bufences, born in Indian Territory, recalls Fort Davis in 1850 and the camel riders, serving as a scout with the 10th Cavalry. He was found weakened after a fall near his camp, treated in Alpine, with little knowledge of relatives or a possible Fort Davis marriage.

64000 Pounds of Honey Shipped By Marathon Co
Marathon Co shipped 64 000 pounds of Brewster county honey last Friday under the U S Department of Agriculture. The rail shipment to Houston will be transferred to another ship for delivery to Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands with Ponce Mayaguez and San Juan in Puerto Rico among the receivers. This brings the yearly total to 157 600 pounds of the 1950 crop.

Dr Jeff D Ray Dies in Fort Worth After Alpine Ties
Dr Jeff D Ray a well known Alpine area resident and longtime Paisano encampment attendee died in a Fort Worth hospital Monday. He taught homiletics at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary for 37 years and wrote a Fort Worth Star Telegram column since 1935. Funeral services were at Broadway Baptist Church Fort Worth with burial at Greenwood Cemetery. He is survived by his widow son H C Ray of Fort Worth and a daughter Mrs Freeman of Fort Worth.

The chamber of commerce board on Tuesday adopted a report to fund a 12 foot high by 22 foot sign on Highway 90 east of Sanderson. It will mark the scenic border route and the shortest westward path, with lumber yards supplying material at cost plus 10 percent. Contributions cover erecting costs with sign committee chair Val Richardson and Hugh White coordinating through the chamber office.

Jesse B. Pugh arrives to assume duties as pastor of the First Christian Church. He studied at Texas Christian University earning a BA in 1948 and a Bachelor of Divinity in June. He served student churches in Anna and Princeton and led Melissa for four and a half years. His fiancée is Barbara Jean Haag of San Antonio. their wedding is set for July 17 at Central Christian Church in San Antonio.

Alpine School Board Acts On Library and Faculty Plans
Alpine public schools board met June 18 to consider administrative recommendations. They approved $500 for each of three libraries and delayed the $1,000 upgrade plan. Purchases included desks, chairs, and a study hall, plus a cook stove for Central cafeteria. They anticipate hiring two to six new teachers to handle 1077 expected students and named James Brown to replace Guy Woodrutt as high school coach. Mr Brown, a Sul Ross graduate, resides in Alpine with his wife and continues graduate work.

Junior Cowboys defeat Marfa Indians in Alpine game
The Junior Cowboys beat the Marfa Indians 14 to 4 in Marfa with Chuck Ellis pitching a full game and four two base hits. Henry led the Juniors bats with three hits in five at bats while Ellis Harris and Henry added two base hits. The Juniors face the Alpine Internationals Latin American club at Kokernot Field Sunday at 3 p.m. as part of a Latin American celebration including a rodeo.

Sleeping Sickness Hits Horses In Hovey Area
An outbreak of sleeping sickness among horses near Hovey was reported this week by county agent Frank Newsom. Bites from horse flies and mosquitoes are blamed for early cases, with the disease usually fatal and more common after late summer rains. Vaccination is emphasized to protect saddle horses, as immunity develops in about two weeks and lasts through the remainder of the year.

Heat Wave Keeps City Water Use High in Alpine Area
Heavy demand continues as a week of high temperatures wears on. City pumps averaged about 900 000 gallons daily since Monday, with 963 000 gallons by Tuesday. The Parker well on Fort Davis highway began operating yesterday, and Funk estate well may start today if needed. Officials warn consumption could top one million gallons daily this week unless rain relieves the heat. Despite heavy irrigation use, reservoirs stay in reserve as rain clouds appeared without rainfall. Continuous pumping risks drops in some wells, but moisture may arrive soon.

Two area youths volunteer for air forces

Veterinarian Plans Alpine Arrival for July
Dr. D. W. Dodd, a veterinarian, announced to The Avalanche his plan to establish a local office around July 1 and move his family to Alpine. He will occupy a West Alpine home owned by Mrs. Barwood, with Mrs. Dodd formerly Doris Evelyn MacDonald of Marfa. Dodd recently returned from San Antonio to finalize moving arrangements, having previously lived in Marfa in 1947 and 1948 while directing the Marfa Experiment Station.
