Elijio Tellez Early Day Indian Scout Buried in Alpine
Elijio Tellez an elderly Native American scout died last Thursday after a fall at the R T Key ranch in southern Brewster County. He arrived in Fort Davis as a youth and spent most of his life in the area with years in Mexico. Funeral services were held in Alpine and he was buried in Elm Grove Cemetery.

Alpine and Marathon party survives near tragedy at lake
A weekend fishing trip at Lake Walk on Devil's River near Del Rio ended with a near tragedy. Alpine and Marathon residents including Mr and Mrs Adams and their daughter Susan and Miss Simpson were aboard when the boat sank 75 feet from shore. Mrs Stovell and Stevie and Mr Herring and Markellen reached safety, while Miss Simpson was rescued by nearby boaters. The vessel and gear were lost, and the incident prompted relief from Johnny Whistler and others.

Country club destroyed by fire last Friday

Fatal car truck crash near Marathon injures four
A Tuesday morning crash on Highway 90 seventeen miles east of Marathon killed Paula Benavides, 78, and injured four members of the Espinosa family from Los Angeles. Eddie Espinosa Sr. reported the sun blinded him before colliding with a Braswell truck. Eddie Espinosa Jr. and Dora Espinosa, ages uncertain, were treated at Alpine hospital. the driver of the truck was uninjured. The car was nearly demolished. officers said no one else was critically hurt.

Alpine Junior Legionnaires lost 12 to 1 to Odessa Saturday night at Jessa's Oller park. Dan Valenzuela pitched for Odessa with 6 hits and 8 strikeouts, while Carl Slaymeyer fanned 16 Alpine batters. Alpine committed 9 errors, two for Odessa, as six runs scored in the second inning. Alpine scored in the first and had innings in the fourth fifth sixth and seventh with limited success. Water usage hit a ten day high with about 1,100,000 gallons pumped in a 24 hour period on Monday and Tuesday.
