J L Waller named manager of the Penney Co store in Alpine succeeding C M Corkran who moves to Colorado City. Waller, a five year Eastland incumbent, began with Penney in 1885 at Denton and later Dallas before Eastland. He and his wife will relocate with their sons Jimmy and Bobby to Alpine, living in the Whiteside apartments. Waller, a Denton High School and North Texas State graduate, joins Alpine groups and says no staff changes are planned and Penney customers will receive continued service and assistance.
A good rain fell in the Alpine area late Wednesday afternoon and evening, with Alpine totals at Sul Ross college reaching 0.60 inches. Rain extended west toward Marfa and north, though Fort Davis saw a lighter fall. Ranch reports include Perry Cartwright and Vernon McIntyre each with about 0.25 inches, Parr-Pate about 0.50 inches, and rain continuing from Alpine through Marathon to Persimmon Gap at the Big Bend park entrance.
Starting Friday night June 15 at 7 30, the Sul Ross Lobo band presents a series of concerts in front of the Library on the Sul Ross campus. Friday features two trumpet soloists and a brass trio with Donald Wakins of Weslaco performing Harry James Concerto for Trumpet and Conrad DeJong of Mercedes performing Trumpeter's Lullaby. The program also includes a modern brass trio The Three Tacks by Wakins, DeJong, and Everett McCauley.

The Alpine Cowboys defeated Carlsbad Independents 8 to 3 on Saturday and 19 to 0 on Sunday in a pair of 1951 season exhibitions. Boone and Fitzpatrick pitched Saturday, while Faulk and Nobby Graves limited the visitors on Sunday. Isbell, Coody, Graves, and Chandler led the offense with homers and multiple extra base hits amid Carlsbad errors and Cowboys fielding. The club plans further games with Jal Gassers and Lubbock Sun Downers this weekend at home starting Saturday.
C M Corkran longtime J C Penney store manager exits Alpine effective weekend to take command of the Colorado City store. After 20 years with the firm he reflects on Alpine ties civic leadership and memories of the fire response. Mrs Corkran and three children remain in Alpine until housing found. Corkran will not assume July 1 duties until on site.

The Alpine post office will advance to first class on July 1, 1961, per Annie K. Tur. Only Del Rio and Alpine are first class with a Federal building. Changes include a small box rent increase and a new money order system with extended hours. Box rates become 75 cents, 1.00, and 1.50 per quarter for small, medium, and large.
Alpine Lodge No. 766 AF and AM votes to remodel the Masonic building using treasury funds, moving stairway to aid Alpine Supermarket, modernizing kitchen and creating women and office spaces, with plans for additional rooms and wiring. The 1912 structure is debt free and funds on hand will cover most work, start expected soon.
Trans-Texas Airways was among 10 Texas airlines honored by the National Safety Council for 1950 aviation safety. The carrier achieved 33 500 000 passenger mile in 1950 while flying scheduled domestic and overseas routes.
Forest D Moyer of Tucumcari New Mexico will hold a meeting at the Alpine Church of Christ beginning June 24 and continuing through July 1. Moyer formerly served as minister for the Church of Christ at Post and recently moved to Tucumcari as minister. The local church invites all to attend daily services at 8 p.m.
A city grader is deployed for a cemetery cleanup at Elm Grove in Leeds during a slack period. The city will furnish a crew of men for additional tasks at the cemetery.
Victoria County agent Joe M. Glover is named 10 district agent for Extension District 6 based at Fort Stockton. He will oversee 18 county agents across 38 counties including El Paso and Midland, replacing G. W. Barnes. Glover, 40, has been Victoria county ag agent since 1947 and will move to Fort Stockton after July 1.
Alpine Independent School District officials announce repairs to Central gym after a April 25 blast from a hot water heater. bids end June 25 with work to finish by September 1. No injuries reported. only three of 20 large light bulbs damaged.
Alpine public schools launched the Learning and Recreation program in three parts. The band program directed by Ralph Pauley invites intermediates and beginners Tuesday through Friday at 1 pm, with a high school band evening schedule. Homemaking efforts, led by Mrs. Bennie Helen Simpson, include a Future Homemakers club meeting and a study of pattern making. Recreation, led by Coach James Crawford, offers sports for 12 to 14 year olds with basketball and baseball leagues, and an orientation meeting set for June 19 with about 70 students already involved.
The Alpine Big Bend park highway project advances with 10 miles of new road south of Alpine and 60 miles of paving northward from the present road. Route surveys determine the exit path for the 10 mile segment while right of way is secured. North of Alpine includes widening grading and surfacing on a road paved over 20 years ago to the Jett Davis County line. The completed route will reach 20 miles from the park boundary near Study Butte.
A 102 year old Indian ranch employee, recovering in Alpine hospital after a fall at the Key Evans ranch 65 miles south of Marathon, lay unconscious for two hours before fellow workers found him. He sustained bruises and exposure and plans to share life stories in a later installment. He has worked for the KT Key family 23 years and once hunted as a scout with the army camels in the area. He is expected to be out of hospital soon.
The Fort Davis high school will add four rooms, with construction by R D Dick Swartz at a bid of 40600. The project is funded by a 37300 voter approved issue from the common school district. Swartz says work has begun and is expected to finish in September. The addition adds three rooms to the north gym and one to the west for classes and shop programs.
