A hailstorm with heavy rain and strong winds struck Alpine area, causing roof damage and losses to gardens, shrubs, and a truck farm. Richard Moser reported about 60 bushels of produce lost. The storm included a half hour of bright electrical display, raising the month’s total precipitation to 1.86 inches amid cool fall-like conditions.

Presbyterian Conference For Young People Closes Session
The Intermediate conference of the Presbyterian church ended its session at Mitre Peak Guest Ranch north of Alpine with 87 registered. 44 in the intermediate group and 43 in the senior division. Rev. Fred S. Rogers announced the results this week. Mrs. Fred S. Rogers and Miss Cora Lee Morrow taught in the senior conference. Presbyterian church representatives attended from both conferences. The meeting was described as highly successful.

Union Service Set For Sunday Night
A union church service will be held Sunday at 6 15 PM as the first in a summer series. Rev Ray McGrew of the Methodist church will preach with Rev E B Isaacks of the Christian church leading. A choir from four participating churches Baptist Christian Methodist and Presbyterian will sing under Mrs Jack Davis direction. An anthem has been arranged and organizers hope for strong attendance at Kokernot park indoors this year.

Alpine Public Schools Names New Vocational Ag Teacher
R C Mitchell of Lorenzo was hired by the Alpine school board as vocational agriculture teacher succeeding E L Bailey who resigns. Mitchell, a Texas Tech graduate with BA and MA, taught VA in Crobyton and Texas Tech. Bailey plans to start a feed and poultry business in Jacksonville. Bailey’s poultry judging teams won state and placed high nationally. Mitchell and his wife plan to move to Alpine by July 1.

Ten border patrolmen are reassigned to various northern stations after training in El Paso. Eighteen new recruits from the El Paso school will join for supplemental field training. First Aid Course Plans Completed
Plans have been practically completed for a standard Red Cross first aid course beginning June 24. Classes of 1% hours will run three nights a week for four weeks under Dr. W. E. Tragedy at Mouth of Inta Helena Canyon Sunday
A boy named Jimmy Waters drowned Sunday afternoon at the mouth of Inta Helena Canyon while swimming with Terlingua and Study Butte youths. Despite rescue attempts and artificial respiration, he died near the spot where he was last seen. He leaves four sisters and two brothers and was laid to rest at Elm Grove cemetery after services led by local clergy.

The Rotary district 115 relief drive has raised 306.72 dollars for families of Rotarians killed or disabled in disasters. Funds were certified to District Governor Joel Wright by 5 pm Wednesday. Contributions listed include Marfa 100, Alamogordo 16.22, Fort Stockton 85, Fort Sumner 32, Lovington 5, Jal 5, Deming 5, Hot Springs 10, Pecos 50, Alpine 50, Van Horn 25. Several large clubs have not yet reported, with more expected from 35 clubs.
