A roundup of local civic chatter notes petitions for a water bond election amid social visits to Disneyland and San Francisco. Supt. George W. Miller announced a 20 percent May rise with 9 296 visitors in 2 656 cars, up from 7 417 in 1957. First five months show a 10 percent gain to 30 755 visitors in 8 787 autos. Persimmon Gap led with 2 014 car entries. Maverick Mountain had 928. Completion of over 5 miles of paved Rio Grande Village roads under Mission 66.
Farm Director John Mullen announces Alpine Texas venue Kokernot Field for the Milwaukee Braves Fifth Annual Baseball School June 19 20 and 21 under lights and daytime sessions. Hall of Famer Paul Waner joins staff along with Earle Halstead Tom Chandler Ray Van Cleef and Herbert Kokernot arranging instruction for boys ages 16 to 22 with required personal gear and Braves supplied equipment.
Vacation Bible School at the First Baptist Church ended last night with 145 enrolled and an average attendance of 125 students.
Sherman Newsom of Alpine joins the Civil Aeronautics Administration as an electronics specialist. He will service communications gear atop Elephant Mountain and at the Marfa and Fort Stockton VOR stations alongside supervisor Terry Oliver. Newsom is an Alpine High School graduate, studied at Sul Ross and the University of Texas, served in World War II, and continues as chief engineer of KVLF. The Alpine district spans Valentine to the Pecos River. The Elephant Mountain telephone line should be finished by June 15 and become operational on a non commissioned basis once all equipment arrives.
Flag Day falls on Saturday June 14 marking the 1st birthday of the Stars and Stripes. Congress declared in 1777 that the flag be red and white striped with white stars on blue. The American Legion and Auxiliary urge flying the flag at homes and businesses.
Five people were injured in a two car crash at Holland Avenue and Harrison Street Tuesday night. A Chevrolet carryall driven by Margaret Pallanes and a Chevrolet sedan driven by Fidel Cano collided head on. front ends were severely damaged. Passengers Delia Vallanes Jose Lara Teresa Portillo and Mrs Cano were hurt. Mr Cano was uninjured. Chief Jack Johnson investigated at Water County Memorial Hospital.
Announcement reports Dr and Mrs G W Smith trading their suburban home and apartment house on N Harrison Ave for 2697 acres of ranch land 20 miles north of Tahlequah Oklahoma. The Hurdetts move into Alpine, with a 2600 acre improved ranch leased to tenants. Smiths relocate to Gilmer apartments.
Sul Ross State College expects enrollment for the first summer term to rise about ten percent from last year. President Bryan Wildenthal noted four students had registered by yesterday with 45 more expected in the next two weeks at summer workshops. He said Sul Ross leads Texas state colleges in summer term attendance. The University of Texas has about 4,000 summer registrations of its 18,000 long-term students.
The Pecos Chamber plans a booster trip to Alpine on Tuesday June 17 to promote the 75th Anniversary Studebaker event in Alpine. The party travels by bus via Marfa and will stop briefly in Pecos, with parking arranged in front of the Holland Hotel.
Dr and Mrs D A Hilton announce the sale of the Hilton Motel and other properties at Holland Avenue and North Cockrell to Irma W Nichols of Reality California. Nichols will manage the motel, has Calfornia motel experience, and will be joined later by sisters. The Hiltons plan a three day Dallas chiropractic convention trip, Missouri visit, Norfolk Lake fishing, and trips to Houston San Antonio and Brownsville before returning to Alpine. Dr Hilton retires from chiropractic practice.
Eighty young people from the Presbytery of the Southwest will hold their annual senior high conference in Alpine June 16 to 23 with headquarters at Sul Ross State College. The Alpine Chamber of Commerce will assist with transportation for sightseeing trips. Dick Schmidt is conference director with Van Shaw of the Manhattan Presbyterian Church of El Paso as assistant director.
City Commission voted to condemn a parcel owned by Mise Flora Dougherty for a pipeline easement across Section 23 in Sunny Glen. Mayor Lockhart said Minas Dougherty’s counter offer was rejected as too liberal, and the city attorney was instructed to inform the owner that further offers may be considered to withdraw proceedings.
Alpine Public School opens its summer enrichment program Monday June 16 at 8 am with a general assembly in the High School Auditorium. The program spans 20 lessons plus six weeks of typing and homemaking, offering courses in arithmetic review phonics reading foreign languages and arts and crafts. Enrollment targets grades 3 through high school with varying instructors and noncredit standings.
Patterson of Alpine announces candidacy for reelection to the 3rd Judicial District bench. Appointed in August 1954 and elected to a four year term in November, he cites experience and training as qualifications. Due to the district’s size he seeks votes by this announcement to gain support for a second term. The district includes Presidio, Jeff Davis, Pecos, Reagan, Upton, and Presidio counties.
Mayor W E Lockhart and Commissioners Glenn Burgess and Gene Hillger signed a petition urging a referendum on $65 000 in time warrants for four Alpine water main projects. Petitions circulated require 10 percent of qualified voters to force an election. The city approved warrants for pipe fittings and fire plugs and began bid ads for sections in New Town Alpine Bluebonnett Carpenter additions North Alpine Ave G Ave A to Sul Ross Hill and western city areas.
The Alpine Cowboys travel in Arizona for four games and plan to return to Kobernot Field at 8 tomorrow night for a game.
Seguin White Sox visit the Cowboys for Friday Saturday and Sunday games. Casa Grande took an 18 series win, Alpine claimed 43, Tommy Snow hit a Sau homer, Jerry Wolff drove in the winning run in the seventh. Ray Van Cleef hit a grand slam to spark an 8–? Cowboys win over Alpine Merchants. Higbert Lattimore started, allowing six hits, two runs and six walks. Wolff pitched 2⅔ innings with three hits, two runs, two walks. Horlen finished with one hit and three walks. Two Alpine Cowboys players made the All Southwest Conference team: Toby Newton of Texas A&M and Gary Herrington of AGM.
