Southern Pacific officials announced final details of all year tours to the Big Bend region. Tours depart from New Orleans on Saturdays and Wednesdays with stops in San Antonio Alpine and El Paso, including Carlsbad Caverns and a Juarez visit. An additional Chicago origin tour is planned.

Alpine Man Takes Top Rodeo Honors at Mona Hans Jubilee
Tex Martin of Alpine earned all around cowboy in the Mona Hans Golden Jubilee rodeo sponsored by the Monahans Jaycees held last week. He placed in four events for 217 points, outranking Freckles Brown of Lawton Oklahoma who had 196 points. Bill Beau McCutcheon of Fort Davis won first in roping.

Cowboys Start 1954 Season With Win Then Rut by Oilers
The Alpine Cowboys opened at Ko Kernot Field with an 11 2 victory over the Plymouth Oilers of Linton before losing 16 0 the next day. Tommy Bowers pitched a 12 strikeout gem in a four inning win while Pete Swain Leo Burkhalter and R L Patterson drove in runs. Oilers answered Sunday with 18 hits and a grand slam by Jimmy Mayfield as Dewey Jacobs limited the Pokes to four hits.

Henry Newton Dies After Short Illness in El Paso Hospital
Henry Hank Newton 45 a resident of Alpine for eight years died in an El Paso hospital last Friday after a brief illness. He worked as a mechanic at Stam baugh Auto Co. on West Holland Ave until two days before his death. Born in Capulin New Mexico he lived there most of his life. Burial was in Fairmount Cemetery Raton New Mexico with survivors including his widow Gertrude Newton of Alpine his parents Mr and Mrs Newton of Capulin three sisters and two brothers. Mr and Mrs Elmer Newton attended the funeral in Raton.

A survey will start soon in the Alpine area about a community mausoleum to be built in Elm Grove cemetery. Annual Boys Camp Opens at Paisano in West Texas
The Baptist camp gathers 200 to 250 boys from West Texas towns at Paisano Baptist encampment near Alpine starting Monday under Rev. Clifford Spencer of Wink with Mrs. R. L. Wittner as district young people's leader. The Junior G A girls camp runs June 28 to July 2 and the intermediate girls camp July 5 to July 9. The main Paisano encampment runs July 26 to August 1.

PFC Augustine S. Garcia of Marathon Texas and Battery D of the 7th Infantry Division's 15th Anti Aircraft Artillery Battalion aid a five room school project in Korea. Garcia, a truck driver, joined the Army in November 1952 and went overseas in May 1953 after basic at Fort Bliss.

Sheep Goat Raisers To Hold Meeting This Week
W B Dorris 16th district commander elect of the American Legion and former Alpine Big Bend Post No 79 leader left for Austin as an invited guest for Boys State activities. He will attend the Governor's ball as the only invited Boys State guest from the district. Dorris has long driven Legion youth programs and chaired the Mineral Wells to El Paso Americanization committee for five years. He helped organize Alpine youth activities since 1948 and has funded sending boys to Austin for five years. He expects to return Sunday.

Soldiers begin second eight weeks at Fort Bliss

Scouts Hear Mitre Peak Camp Opens Sunday
Three hundred sixty nine scouts have registered for two week and one week sessions at Mitre Peak Girl Scout camp 13 miles north of Alpine. Walter Campbell Camp chairman says the camp opens Sunday under Miss Bettyla Daniel who directs the program with Pecos Girl Scouts offering hiking mountain climbing and campfire activities at the 74 acre Fern Canyon site.

Alpine Students Attend Band and Majorette Clinic
Twenty three Alpine high school students joined a ten day Band and Majorette school at Sul Ross College from June 7 to 16. Mrs Inga Mowatt Dies at 88 in Alpine
Mrs Inga Mowatt aged 88 died Wednesday evening at the home of her grandson Fred Olson on College Hill after several weeks illness. Born In Oslo she came to the United States at age five and lived in Chicago before moving to Alpine three years ago. She belonged to Calvary Lutheran in Chicago and later to First Presbyterian in Alpine. Survived by two sons Roy of Chicago and E A Olson of Dallas three grandsons and six great granddaughters. Body sent to Chicago for burial tomorrow with Fort Worth trip noted for the escort.
