The Alpine Cowboys with a 1 2-9 record head to Cuero and Linton for a four game series June 18 19 20 then host Brooke Army Medical Center at Koerner Field June 25 26. High drama followed as they beat Jal Gassers 16 14 in a slugfest and swept a doubleheader with the Internationals 6 4 and 9 0.
Liz Taylor and Rock Hudson visited their first drive-in at Alpine Twin Peaks Drive-In after time at Alpine Country Club. Owner Joe Davidson notes they followed parking prompts and enjoyed the film Prodigal with Lana Turner and Edmund Purdam.
Alpine attendees Freddy Davis Terry Beckett and Phil McGaughy won state offices in Austin June 5 11 Davis named to the Supreme Court Beckett to the Railroad Commission McGaughy to the House of Representatives Davis also won the 50 yard dash title and his city won volleyball while McGaughys city placed second in volleyball Freddy's team tied touch football 6 6 but fell 2 1 on penetrations They received commendations from W A Morrison Court of Criminal Appeals chairing Boys State
Kay and Colwell are slated to attend the annual Lions Convention in Norfolk Virginia with plans to travel from Washington. The event gathers local service club members for meetings and community projects.
County Commissioner and Mrs. Lee M. Smith have purchased a site in the 700 block of East Nations Ave and will move their home from 910 E Holland early next week. An Odessa man assisted by Charles Ross of Alpine will do the moving. The Smiths sold their corner lot on Holland to R G Elliott.
Drilling advances slowly this week as Riess water test well nears 11000 feet depth late yesterday.
Morrison holds a three win zero loss record through week three of Little League play as of Monday June 13. The Morrison and M System clubs met last night while Baker faces the Braves at Fort Davis with Model Cleaners in second place after three wins and one loss. Schedule lists games through June 24 with Morrison vs Baker on Tuesday June 21 and other matchups at Fort Davis.
Brewster County Motors in Alpine and the Big Bend area adds a Mercury sales and service center. Frank and Reginald Votaw say the 1955 Mercurys are on display at 402 E. Holland Ave and invite the public to visit.
Brewster County will drill test wells in Sunny Glen Musquiz Canyon and Ranger Canyon after a county commissioners court study. Drilling 60 to 90 days, depths 100 to 900 feet, to evaluate water-bearing zones with U S Geological Survey involvement.
Dr. Bryan Wildenthal announced Sul Ross State College will receive roughly $75,000 more each year, with $60,000 allotted for two years. A half million gallon water storage tank was approved to boost fire safety, bids expected around Sept. 1. The increase enables hiring eight or nine additional teachers and includes $30,000 yearly for maintenance and repairs.
The Milwaukee Braves baseball school returns for a second year at Koker Field starting next Wednesday through Saturday. Earle Halstead Paul Waner and Billy Southworth lead the event with daily games likely free of charge. About 50 boys from Dallas and Seguin attended last June. Mrs Alma Speer of Denver donated a 1937 Ford pickup to Boy Scout Troop 4.

John Skinner was elected new commander of Big Bend Post 79 American Legion at a August meeting. He will replace Dr. Tom Cope and will take office after the regular session. Other officers elected include Charles R. Ives 1st vice commander Sherman Newsom 2nd vice commander Anita Hollis adjutant Elvie Williams finance officer Cliff Roark sergeant at arms Gene Hendryx chaplain Fritz Bill Weyerts historian M L Hopson service officer Werner Hollis property custodian H L Koker David Kokernot A L Sutton Bill Sohl Kenneth Carlisle and an executive committee. Delegates to the state convention in San Antonio July 22 to 24 were Bill Dorris Bill Sohl John Skinner and Pat Kinzie.
All persons interested in the antelope hunting season in the Trans-Pecos area next October are urged to attend a public meeting at 8 o clock tonight in the district courtroom of the Brewster County Courthouse in Alpine. State officials include P B Uzell wildlife biologist A W Jackson and A R Williams game warden supervisor and Sanford DeVoll. After the meeting two movies Valley and Salty will be shown.
The Alpine area learns of Virginia Madisons book The Big Bend Country released. Madison trained at Sul Ross College earning BA and MA degrees and began the work while staying with the late John Young, vaquero to J Frank Dobie.
Big Bend Post 79 approved plans for a new 30000 dollar American Legion home with site to be announced later. The post has 1000 dollars in the building fund and donations will be refunded if the 30000 dollar goal is not reached by July 1956. John Skinner heads the building committee with Kokernot Hight Bud Phillips and M L Hopson. The First National Bank in Alpine will hold donations.
First National Bank of Alpine to install a modern night depository built by Mosler Safe Co of Hamilton Ohio. The system will let customers deposit directly from the sidewalk at any hour including Sundays and holidays.
