H T Fletcher longtime Brewster resident dies in San Angelo after brief illness. Funeral service held with Pastor Raymond C Burns officiating. Burial at Marfa Cemetery with local fraternal orders noted and Fletcher described as charter Alpine Rotary member and a Shriners and Rotarian.
John Colwell will be installed as president of the Lions Club next Tuesday night in the Holland Hotel with Roy Minear as installing officer. Other officers include Marvin Pierce, Edward King, Carl Shultz Jr, Thad Corkins, Duane Smith, Eugene Blackburn, Billy Weston and additional directors. City of Alpine's garbage truck receives olive green repaint with a white sign announcing the Sanitary Department.
Mayor Hugh White announced that Alpine citizens favor continuing the Riess water well drilling by 50 to 1 after a city poll. the City Commission voted to resume work despite a prior depth limit. Drilling may reach 1500 feet with Paul Gooden as driller while Stephen Riess urged continuation.
Sanford DeVoll arrived to serve as warden for the Alpine area after graduating from the 9th Game Warden School at Texas A&M in May. A San Saba native, he and wife Mrs DeVoll with daughters Marsha Gail and Regina Gay reside at 607 N Eighth St Alpine. Previously he worked as an interior decorator in San Saba.
Clarinetist Pete Cisneros of Ozona and trombonist Kenneth Kreps of San Antonio will perform a joint recital in Sul Ross State College main auditorium at 3 p.m. Sunday. Both are junior music majors studying under Joe Bellamah, and the recital fulfills part of their bachelor of music degree requirements. Admission is free and the public is invited.
Texas Game and Fish biologist P B Uzzell announced an antelope hunting season will be held in Trans Pecos next October. Public meetings to discuss regulations begin with an Alpine session on Friday June 17 in the Brewster County Courthouse district courtroom. Attendees will hear from Uzzell his assistant A W Jackson of Van Horn and others on bag limits and methods.
Funeral services for Lew B. Spencer aged 67 contractor and broker were held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at the Presbyterian Church with Rev. C W Newbill officiating. Graveside rites were by the American Legion and burial followed in Elm Grove Cemetery with Livingston Funeral Home directing. Spencer died of a heart attack Tuesday in his Holland Hotel room. Born in Waxahachie in 1888, he had lived in Alpine 29 years and served with the 16th Engineers in World War I. Survivors include two sisters Mrs J A Whitlow of Tulsa and Mrs George M Le Crone of Colorado Springs and two brothers A N Spencer of San Antonio and T A Spencer of Three Rivers New Mexico.
The public is invited to a barbecue and dance at the American Legion Home this Saturday night. Barbecue starts at 6 pm, dance with Tidwell's Orchestra at 8 30 pm. barbecue price 1 25 for adults and 50 cents for children under 12. dance tickets 1 per person.
Ken McAllister former Alpine High head coach was named principal of Central School succeeding Mrs Katherine Smith. Smith will teach acting English in grades 6 and 8 and manage the Central library. McAllister plans admin studies at Sul Ross with MA degree and certificate by August. He has 16 years teaching experience and moved from El Dorado Texas with his family. His sons Kennie and Mike will attend Central.
W. R. Williams and associates of Odessa plan a 1,900 foot cable tool wildcat in Brewster County, 38 miles south of Marathon. It will be No. 1 Purnell Location on a 640 acre lease, 2,810 feet from the north and 330 feet from the west lines of 2-284-T&SLL.
Cowboys launch their ninth annual season under Herbert Kokernot at 2 80 p m Saturday against Jal Gassers at Kokernot Field here Tom CI will manage the Cowboys, largely composed of Sul Ross players including Red Swanson and Bob Frey. Swanson, a top Louisiana pitcher, headlines a strong mound staff with Pearson, Jones, and Watts.
Model Cleaners led the Little League standings with wins over the Fort Davis Braves 5 3 and Baker Jewelers 10 3 after opening action. Morrison's and M System remained undefeated as Tuesday games produced a 2 1 Baker’s last Friday featured Jim Hale tossing a no run no hit effort in limited action. The league plays near Kokernot Field in Alpine Fort Davis with a Friday opener ceremony and Mayor White in attendance.
State health officer commends Alpine for eliminating cross connections between private supplies and city water. Improvements include better well fencing and sealing, effective chlorination at three wells serving the pink tank, and South Hill gas chlorinator performing well. Plans outline installing remaining chlorinators to ensure residual chlorine. City officials Stowell and Supt Johns praised.
In the June issue of Trail-R-News George S Wells profiles Big Bend National Park calling it the first true year around park. He notes the sun shines every day and rain is limited to a few summer afternoons, portraying it as ideal for trailer camping.
A slow drizzling rain followed a dust storm in the Big Bend and Trans-Pecos region. Alpine and nearby ranches received measurable precipitation last week, including 2 to 4 inches on June 2. Sul Ross College station logged light rain June 1–3. The Mugmana Cafe reopening and a bake sale by Rainbow Girls are noted alongside local visits to Carlsbad Caverns.
