Powers Named Asst. Chief In Alpine Police
F L Bud Powers will become stand in chief of police in Alpine on July 1 after unanimous City Council approval following Councilman C D McCollister and Police Chief Jack Johnson. Powers earns 400 a month while Chief Johnson's salary rises to 425. Powers, former Brewster County deputy sheriff, is now Casner's service manager. The council also approved installing a storage tank for ethyl gasoline to be used in the City police car.

Enrollments Hit 916 for Sul Ross Summer Session
Sul Ross State College reports 916 students enrolled for the first six weeks of summer school, 14 under the prior session in 1965. The English Institute had boosted the prior figure by over 50. No college credit institutes are offered now. three credit institutes begin July 11: Institute for Teachers of Educationally Deprived Students, the Reading Conference, and the Art Institute.

Daily Tours Begin At W D Observatory Fort Davis
The W Donald Observatory announces a trial period of daily tours of the 82 inch reflector dome. Tours start at 9:00 a.m. on weekdays and at 1:30 p.m. on weekends, with plans for permanent daily tours once approved. Fred Gibson Dies at 85 Alpine Mayor and Rail Official
Fred Gibson 85 longtime Alpine resident died Monday at Brewster County Memorial Hospital. Services were held Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church with burial in Elm Grove Cemetery. Born August 17 1880 in Wills Point he was Monshans first mayor in 1927 and a retired Texas and Pacific Rail station agent. Survivors include wife Alma Hunter four daughters a son ten grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren.

Exhibition Of Twirling And Concert To Close Camp
A twirling exhibition led by Bob Murphy and a full-scale concert will close Sul Ross State College’s two week summer band camp on Friday at 7 pm on the college tennis courts and Main Auditorium. The baton expert Murphy has held multiple championship titles and TV appearances. The concert features the honor’s band and the symphonic band conducted by Gene Witherspoon and Robert C. Taylor with a trumpet solo and Bach selections. Harold Jackson directed the SRSC Band and camp.
