A local editorial critiques rising taxes and more regulations, cites a Supreme Court ruling allowing cities to ban door to door selling, and calls for tougher traffic enforcement. It notes driver hazards, unpaid city car taxes, and hopes to locate historic Fort Penn Colorado photos and long-time residents for future features.
Joe Bellamah, formerly Wesaco high school band director for eight years, takes over Sul Ross College band duties beginning June 1. He led the brass department at the Wurlitzer School of Music in New York City for four years and studied trumpet with Max Schlossberg. He has played with multiple orchestras and is a noted brass teacher and clinician.
Police state no arrests yet in the burglary of a Watson Anderson warehouse on the Southern Pacific railroad yards. Entry was gained by breaking a window and twenty four cases of beer were recovered. officers doubt any other items were stolen and say a few more beer cases may remain unaccounted for.

George H Storey of Alpine won the May 15 bid of 116 785 for two new park buildings in the Big Bend area including a fifth residence a power house and radio-telephone center at Alpine. May permits total 40 500 for a Catholic chapel near Newtown and several residence additions as Sul Ross State College opens summer term with new faculty.
Rainfall across the Big Bend and Davis Mountains improved range conditions and local farms. Alpine areas reported up to 1.58 inches in one day, with totals around 1.71 inches for the week and 3.82 inches for May, the highest since 1940. Hail damaged crops near Lobo while homes on North Fifth Street began new construction.
The church announces a change in schedule with services at St James Episcopal at 11 a.m. during June instead of the previously listed 9 a.m. Mr Edwin Gillett will lead in Rev Parlour's absence.
The 1951 Alpine Cowboys, 1950 Texas semi pro champions, start the season with two games against the Carlsbad Independents in New Mexico. Fourteen players from the 1981 roster will be present as manager Chuck Devernaux notes. Start times are 3 p.m. both days and a strong fan turnout is hoped for. The Junior Cowboys visit San Angelo Sunday for a return game with the Skyhawks at Goodfellow Field.
Mr Lennard Tyson a food specialist from the Lubbock district OPS office will hold a meeting at the chamber of commerce building on Wednesday afternoon June 13 to answer questions about price regulations in the food department.
A carload of cotton, about 100 bales from California, caught fire on the Southern Pacific train Thursday morning. The engine sidetracked and the car was unloaded at Alpine as smoke billowed. Firemen wetted remaining bales to allow unloading and save as much as possible.
Highways through Alpine report a hit and run fatality as Watchman Leatherman, 64, was struck while crossing near Holland Avenue and Seventh Street around 2:47 a.m. He died later at a local hospital from head injuries and a crushed chest. Investigators seek clues, museuming his state lab samples for evidence. funeral services held at Livingston Funeral Home.
Alpine officials at city hall pressed a Get Tough traffic plan led by Mayor John Gillette. Sheriff Jim Skinner and Traffic Officer Jo Johnson backed 24 hour patrolling and stricter action against speeding and stop-sign violations. The meeting called for more cooperation from parents and adults to curb hazardous driving by youngsters, noting all ages must follow rules to protect lives and property. A new night watchman will be hired to replace a fatally injured officer, and scouts will view three circuses films at Alpine High on June 19.
The Avalanche will publish a 60th anniversary informational and historical edition on September 14. The 80 page magazine in 18 by 11 inches will cover Brewster and Jeff Davis counties, towns, local history, ranching, mining, geology, Big Bend area sites, and local institutions. It will feature maps, photographs, and biographical material, bound as a reference with a color cover.
