Automatic Rail Crossing Devices Sought by Alpine City Council

Alpine city officials accepted petitions asking Southern Pacific Railroad to install automatic signals at street crossings after a fatal car train collision at the South Street crossing. Other actions include street paving bids, parking restrictions, teen dances at Otto’s Ice Cream, firemen’s training, water metering for Elm Apartments, and a new apartment zoning plan near Sul Ross State College.

West Texas Students Attend Sul Ross Summer Band Camp

Over 160 high school students from Andrews to Alpine attend the Sul Ross Summer Band Camp directed by Lloyd Cook. A faculty recital is set for 7 30 PM tonight in the Main Auditorium with a public concert to follow tomorrow at 7 30 PM.

Gas Firm Moves To New Offices

Southwest Texas Municipal Gas Corp will open for business Monday June 12 in new offices at 404 E Ave E The new structure is owned by Bill Winter Al Nieman new general manager said offices will be established in the Alpine quarters The utility serves Alpine Marfa Fort Davis and Balmorhea Other personnel in the local office include C W Johnson service manager and Mrs Betty Shugarek secretary clerk The local office had been in the Holland Hotel Building

300 Expected For Golf Tournament

Nearly 300 persons are expected in Alpine this week end for the 9th Annual Low Ball Partner shi Golf Tournament at the Country Club. Visitors come from Midland Odessa Houston Dallas Fort Worth Plainview and El Paso. Host pro Jake Garmon says the remodeled course will play like an 18 hole course with two tees per hole. An 18 hole qualifying round is planned Saturday and 27 holes of medal play Sunday. Prizes total 1500 with woods for first place bags for second and balls for third. Fort Stockton pairings defend titles with Sul Ross State College and Texas Tech entrants also in the field. Due to high demand 64 teams will compete.

Little League Opens Summer Season In Alpine

The Alpine Lions Club begins the 1967 summer baseball schedule tonight at 5:30 at Kokernot Little League Park. opening tripleheader features Alpine Jaycees versus Casner's, with Second game First National Bank vs Morrison's and the American Legion against Alpine Conette. Special ceremonies at 7:15. Mayor Hudgins to throw first ball. Gate opens 5 p.m. admission 25 cents adults 15 cents over 12, under 12 free. Schedule lists Bank vs Legion 5:30 Jaycees vs Morrison's 7:15 Casner's vs Alpine Concrete 9:00.

Rainfall Ends Alpine Dry Spell With 0.69 Inch Total

Alpine breaks a long dry spell as rainfall accumulates over three days. The Avalanche gauge shows 0.14 inch on June 3, 0.15 on June 4, and 0.49 on June 6 for a 0.69 inch 3 day total. Tornado sightings near Marfa Fort Davis and Fort Stockton reported with no damage.

Pingleton Named New Minister at First Christian Alpine

Rev. Jim Pingleton begins ministry at First Christian Church in Alpine with a 10 50 a m sermon on Sunday June 11. He was born in Haileyville Oklahoma and educated at Southeastern State College and Brite Divinity School. He and his wife Virginia moved to Alpine this week.

Alpine Receives AWWA Safety Award for 1966

The American Water Works Association Southwest Section presents an Award of Merit to the City of Alpine for an excellent safety record in the water works industry for 1966. Supt. Werner Hollis led the effort as the city’s water utility, with fewer than 50 employees, completing the year without a lost-time injury.

Alpine to launch city-wide Clean-Up campaign

Civic leaders from Alpine meet with the Advisory Committee to plan a year long Clean-Up Fix-Up Paint-Up effort. Hugh White chairs the group with support from city and county officials including Fire Chief Gordon Barrow and Mayor W H Hudgins. Schools will assist with NYC workers and crews will haul debris to ready Alpine for tourists in 1968.

Sul Ross summer enrollment rises to 980, registrar says

Sul Ross State College registrar Glenn F. Davis reports summer school enrollment reached 980 by yesterday afternoon. Last summer's figure was 916. Registration closes today at 4 p.m. Alpine's clean up drive asks for 100 percent support.
