Brewster County 4-H Livestock Team Wins State Judging Contest

The Brewster-Jeff Davis 4-H team scored 1669 points to win the State 4-H Livestock Judging Contest at Texas ACM University. Marsha Mills led in oral reasons with 190 of 200, and several teammates placed high overall. The victory sends Brewster County to the National Livestock Judging Contest in Chicago in November 1967.

Big Bend Set For Texas Tourist Board Gathering

State Rep Gene Hendryx of Alpine will welcome the Texas Tourist Development Agency board at Big Bend National Park tonight. The Big Bend Park Development Committee plans a buffet, program, and hotel dining. The event marks the agency’s first annual meeting in the park with plans to map the 1968 ad campaign and build on Texas tourism growth, including a goal of over one billion dollars in income and a 190 percent increase in 1968.

Curt Wise former Alpine resident and Amicable Insurance district manager died in a Sunday night crash near Albuquerque while en route to a preaching mission. His car was struck after another vehicle pulled into his lane. funeral services are scheduled in Snyder Texas.

Park bid accepted for road relocation project

Acting Supt. John T. Mullady of Big Bend National Park announced a $26,458.50 contract award to Jones Brothers Dirt and Paving Contractors Inc of Odessa. The work relocates Route 7 from Rio Grande Village to Boquillas Canyon Overlook and Route 15 to Fossil Bone Exhibit Road.

Dr. Bob Miller of Sul Ross State College is named dean of McLennan Junior College in Waco. He will relocate with his family after Sul Ross summer term ends. Alpine Lodge set to meet with annual officer elections and other business at 8 p.m. tonight.

Sul Ross State College Reports Record Summer Enrollment

Sul Ross State College announces a summer enrollment of 1 005 students for the first six weeks, up from 916 last year. Registrar Glenn F. Davis notes the fall regular-semester record is 1 808 and orientation for freshmen starts August 28 with fall registration set for August 31 to September 2.

Mitre Peak Girl Scout Camp Opens for Summer Sessions

Mitre Peak Girl Scout Camp north of Alpine opened its first session on June 11 with 155 girls from 16 West Texas counties. Four two week sessions host 185 girls each. vacancies remain for the fourth period. Camp director Miss Jettie Sams notes 36 staff, all training this week, and invites Permian Basin girls to apply by mail or phone.

Spitler Accepts Galveston Post

Spitler, Brewster County Memorial Hospital assistant administrator, resigns effective July 15 and will become assistant planning director for Texas hospitals at UTMB John Sealy in Galveston. He came to Alpine as hospital business manager in 1963. Mrs Spitler is Betty White. They have two children, Brad and Amy.

Alpine School District criticized for unsafe Central Elementary

A Texas Education Agency accreditation visit on May 23 1967 found Alpine Independent School District facilities inadequate. Bricks from Central Elementary threaten the roof and a fence blocks access. Grades 1–4 will use the new Central Building next Sept while 5–8 stay there. The district ponders two sites for a new junior senior high school.
