Delbert Bowles of Princeton New Jersey formerly of Alpine is awarded the Master of Arts degree by Teachers College Columbia University at the 194th commencement exercises held June 1.
The Alpine Butane Co. relocated this week from a site north of the courthouse to the McDaniel building on East Holland Ave. The move reflects a consolidation of facilities and may affect local traffic near the courthouse area.
Fort Davis area endured extreme weather with hail up to three inches, flooding across Limpia and Cienega creeks, and at least five to six bridges washed out. Apples damaged, roofs and windows destroyed, and sheep losses reported on the Mulhern ranch. Maintenance crews set detours as wrecked approaches await rebuilding.
State Highway department invites bids for a five and a half mile rebuild on U S 90 67 east of Alpine. New route will remove sharp curves and grades. Project from Sul Ross campus loop road to 5.48 miles east, noted as a poor section on Highway 90 in Texas.
The 75 member Big Bend Band from 15 Texas high schools will perform Sunday at 6 45 PM on the Sul Ross campus with Milburn E Carey as guest conductor. The program features classical military and concert music. A grand concert is set for Friday June 11 at the Sul Ross auditorium.
The Davis Mountain Federation of Women’s Clubs meets in Alpine with hosts Study club and E Progreso Study club. Highlights include Dr Paul D Jose of McDonald Observatory speaking and a panel moderated by District Judge Alan Fraser on Facing Our Responsibilities To Youth.
Thirty three members of Alpine High's senior class traveled May 24 to Ruidoso New Mexico for a four day outing sponsored by Coach Travis Cook and others. They visited Carlsbad landmarks, rode horses, bowled and skated, saw snow capped peaks and an Indian reservation. The group contributed 100 dollars to the school gym timer and scoreboard fund, the largest senior class gift in school history.
G W Baines executive vice president of the First National Bank of Alpine was elected treasurer of the Texas Bankers Association at a San Antonio meeting. A veteran West Texas banker, he has been with the Alpine bank since its early days.
The Alpine Cowboys resume action after a bye weekend due to the district Legion convention. They host the Goodfellow Army Air Field Skyhawks of San Angelo for two games this Saturday and Sunday at 5 p.m. at Kokernot Field. The Cowboys will be at full strength and the Flyers are described as having a snappy ball club, promising exciting games for local fans.
Charles Rumpf a 15 year old from Waco fell about 45 feet while climbing Casa Grande peak in Big Bend park. He was treated at Alpine hospital then flown to Dallas for brain surgery. his condition described as improving with good recovery prospects.
Ivan McGaughy 59 died last Thursday after a long illness at his brother County Judge Felix McGaughy’s home. Born September 29, 1888 in Nolan County he worked on O2 and W. H. Kokernot ranches then for W. B. Mitchell & Sons and Peyton Packing Co. in El Paso. Funeral services were at the Christian church with Rev. John E. Pickering officiating and Elm Grove cemetery interment. Pallbearers included Anja Wilson Sr., Jim Wilson, Clay Holland, Frank Manggum, Lee Kokernot, and Jack Edwards. Surviving relative is Judge Felix McGaughy.
Col Laroy S. Graham of Alpine former chief of staff G-4 PHILRYCON Manila sails to the United States on the General Weigel May 14 to begin reassignment. His daughter Barbara Jo, Bronze Star Silver Star and Purple Heart recipient, accompanies him. Graham, a Pacific campaign veteran and 1922 New Mexico A&M alumnus, has served since 1923 in various staff and command roles. J E Yates of Lubbock visits brother-in-law Judge Felix McGaughy and Barbara plans Sul Ross summer school attendance.
The Rainbow Girls plan a bake sale in front of the city office tomorrow at 9 30 a m. Proceeds support community projects and activities.
Approximately $400 was realized from the sale of memorial poppies by the Legion Auxiliary in this area last Saturday. Alpine total was $313.72, Fort Davis $32.06, Marfa $53.27. Marathon report pending. Girl Scouts contributed under Miss Mildred Bloys in Fort Davis and Pauline Williams in Marfa, Alpine under Mrs. F. S. Breshears. funds for disabled veterans relief.
Hospital notes record the birth of Edward Don Ogas to Mr and Mrs Manuel Ogas Alpine on June 1 weighing 6 pounds and lists several Alpine and Sanderson patients receiving minor and major operations and treatments including Elizabeth Wells Sul Ross Chas Patterson Alpine Dexter Thomas and Ernest Jessup Sanderson and E R Hudson Alpine.
Wiley Bunton of Del Rio is a guest in the King Terry household, appearing in a social note noting hospitality and local connections.
Hill D. Hudson of Pecos announces his candidacy for the 29th District state senate. A 47 year old lawyer and former county and district official, he calls for redrawn districts, simplified criminal code, state aid for youth centers and disabled veterans, and targeted school funding. He plans to meet voters but may not reach all due to district size.
Brewster County records show 14 new motor vehicle registrations in May, down from 29 in April and 30 in March. Names and makes include Frank Young Alpine Plymouth coupe, Mrs H M Mills Alpine Plymouth sedan, Rex Ivey Jr Alpine Chevrolet, J A Wilson Alpine Plymouth, and Nolland Shuler Alpine Chevrolet truck among others. Mr and Mrs Shellie Barnes left for a month long vacation in Cuero and points east.
Three hundred delegates from 14 West Texas posts attended the District 16 American Legion and Auxiliary convention held last weekend in Alpine. Bill Sohl was elected commander and Mrs. Sohl became district Auxiliary president. Sohl and H L Kokernot Jr. were named delegates to the national convention in Miami on October 17. A memorial service was held at the high school auditorium with State Commander George Berry and District Judge Alan R Fraser as speakers. About 800 people attended a barbecue at Kokernot Park. Distinguished visitors included State Commander Berry, Mrs Vera Cussack, and Earl Earp. The next meeting will be in Midland in November.

The Latin American Community Center in Alpine seeks support for a major expansion after 12 years in a two room house. It hopes to sell its current property for 5000 and buy land for 1500 with three portable buildings to be moved and remodeled for use. An estimated moving cost of 1000 is needed, and organizers welcome advice as they pursue funds.
