Peter Koch, nature photographer and explorer, leaving Big Bend to document peoples and life along the Surinam river. He plans color motion pictures of Carib Indians, Arrawaks, Indo groups, and local wildlife. Expedition to Paramaribo, Surinam, sailing from New York, due back in October.
The Pai sano Encampment boys camp begins Monday June 14 for five days, with the girls camp starting June 21 and ending June 25. The annual general encampment runs July 26 to August 1, led by Dr. R. G. Lee of Memphis as night speaker and South leaders in charge of other work. About $60,000 is being spent to enlarge facilities including new dormitories for about 200 people and a cafeteria expansion to twice its size for the 1948 session.
All boys from 10 and up are invited to report at Kokernot Field Mondays through Fridays from 9 to 11 30 a m for free baseball training. The program is sponsored by H L Kokernot Jr owner of Kokernot Field home of the Alpine Cowboys.
Rev John FE Pickering pastor of the Christian church is guest minister at the Gardner ranch camp meeting near Junction at Roos evelt. Free barbecue is served daily on the grounds and Alpine families attend. Mrs Pickering will fill the pulpit Sunday morning. Robert Sandlin Sunday school superintendent presides at morning worship and Mrs Fred Williams leads the music.
A worker allegedly added mercurochrome to his own paycheck as a protest after a salary cut. The incident centers on payroll manipulation and chemical exposure concerns in the workplace. Further details were not disclosed.
The Big Bend Band clinic concert band will perform its final concert in the Sul Ross auditorium at 7 45 this evening. Milburn F E Carey director of bands at Phillips University Enid Okla leads 15 high schools represented by band students. The program includes symphony works arranged for band marches solos and fantasies. Admission is free and the public is invited.
The first six weeks summer term enrollment at Sul Ross State College is nearing 700, likely to exceed it. Last summer's term started with 624 students, and registration closes this week for a final count.
Mrs H F Goss from Austin arrives to spend the summer with her daughter Mrs C B Casey and Dr Casey.
The Fort Davis Balmorhea highway damaged by a flash flood last week is now open to traffic. All bridge approaches washed out by Limpia creek have been rebuilt with rip-rap work remaining and repaving due. Morris Brown oversees repairs in Limpia canyon while equipment shifts back from Alpine Big Bend road. Mrs. J H Elliott vacationed in Marathon with daughter Mrs Ritchey.
Alpine Cowboys split a doubleheader with the San Angelo Skyhawks at Ko kernot Field. In the first game the Cowboys led by four until the Skyhawks rallied in the seventh, edging ahead 7-6 as both teams traded runs in the ninth. Sun-day’s rematch saw Alpine win 5-4 with Ray Miller pitching well and Young belting the first Cowboy homer of the season driving in the winning run.
The city commission schedules a June 28 hearing at 8 p m on proposed North Fifth street improvements from the bridge south of Central Ward school to the city limits. An engineer’s estimate is 187 per lineal foot for curb and gutter and 123 per lineal foot for four foot sidewalks. The state highway department plans about 35000 for paving State Highway 118 if property owners install curbs gutters and sidewalks.
Rev. Fred S. Rogers of the Presbyterian church returned from Seattle where he attended the 160th annual Presbyterian General Assembly as a representative of the Presbytery of El Paso. He was named to the nominations committee and will report to the church next Sunday at 7 45 PM.
Joel Wright Jr announces a partnership with Del Rio attorney Brian Montague and plans to move to Del Rio within two weeks to establish a law practice. A World War I veteran, he earned his Texas university law degree in July 1947 and opened offices in Alpine earlier this year. He expresses reluctance to leave Alpine but says the new opportunity is compelling while hoping to return to visit.
Mrs Lillie Phillips and daughter Mrs Frank McCollum and Mr McCollum traveled to Groesbeck last Sunday for the funeral of Sgt Walter Phillips, the Phillips family member killed in action during the Allied drive across the English Channel. His body recently arrived in the United States for reburial.
Morgan F. Terry Jr. earns a Bachelor of Science degree at Texas A and M in the spring ceremony. He is the grandson of W. H. Terry Sr. of Alpine, linking two Texas families to the college milestone.
Building permits in Alpine reached the sixty thousand dollar mark for the past month according to Fort Davis reports. A Texas Highway Patrol sergeant and a former officer were involved in a highway incident near Valentine in which two suspects, Eddie Childs and Johnnie Dirden, were wounded and later jailed.
Mr and Mrs Jesse B Gilmer and two daughters Terese and Adele stayed with his parents Mr and Mrs J W Gilmer over the weekend Terese remained for a longer visit with her grandparents The senior Gilmer has resigned as president of the Commodity Credit Corp U S Department of Agriculture and the family will relocate to El Paso to start a new business venture
The Bloys Camp Meeting Association plans its annual June gathering at Skillman Grove on Sunday June 20. Sunday school starts at 10 a.m. with Rev John W Myrose of Fort Davis Presbyterian Church guiding the Bible session. At 11 a.m. Rev Joe B Frederick of Marfa Christian Church will preach. A basket dinner follows at noon. An afternoon 1 30 p m business meeting will fix plans for the encampment August 17 to 24 with speakers to be announced.
Cub Scouts in Marfa Valentine and Van Horn play this summer. Pack 41 Alpine faces a new Alpine Community Center sponsored Pack in the season opener. Centennial boys win 20 to 4. Mr McMillan credited for organizing the new pack.
Mr and Mrs James York of Alpine are the parents of a daughter weighing seven pounds, born June 9. Mr York is a Sul Ross student. Mr and Mrs Eddie Witwer and their three children have left Malvern Arkansas to make Alpine their home.
Building permits in Alpine last month total about 60000 dollars, matching the prior month. The leading project is Smith Furniture Co new 55 by 104 foot cinder tile store with potential upper story, fronting south and east at N Fifth and W Ave E near the post office.
R L James of McCamey bought the Dave Sublett cottage opposite Central ward school south and has moved with Mrs James and two daughters to make their home. Mr James is employed in the McCamey post office.
The Poppy day effort raised 417.39 dollars with strong help from Marathon leader Mrs. Frank Wedin and the Marathon young ladies. Mrs. T. M. Hill aided neighboring towns while Charline Williams and Glenda Joe Glover assisted Mrs. Eliza Wade.
