Sul Ross State College officials expect to name a new head football coach within a few days. Applications have been received from former students and others, with several interviewed by the athletic council and President Bryan Wildenthal.

Alfred E. Creigh, local attorney, named to the grievance committee by Texas State Bar Association president A. J. Folley of Amarillo. Other members include R. I. Bledsoe Maria Melvin Postash El Paso and Raymond A. Lynch Midland. Grievance prosecuting appointees are George W Finger Jr. Robert S. Pine El Paso Shelby H. Blaydes Fort Stockton Ken G. Spencer Crane and Harold L. Sims of El Paso will serve ex officio as Bar director for the 16th Congressional District.
The Paisano Baptist Encampment begins its 30th annual session with 705 meals served on opening night. Two daily services at 11 am and 7 pm feature Dr. Perry Webb and Dr. F B Thorn, alternating, alongside a full training program conducted by notable Baptists from across the state. The large tabernacle seats 1800, and locals may attend any service.
Hospital administrator Joh Stuckwish was notified by Edwin L. Crosby that the board of trustees voted to accept Memorial Hospital. The move precedes membership in the Texas Hospital Association and the American Hospital Association and aims toward accreditation.
Jackie Price, famed baseball trick artist, performs at Kokernot Field tonight with a 7:45 starting show and an 8:15 game between Alpine Cowboys and Artesia Giants. It is family night Friday July 31 with admission for $1 for all. Cowboys lead league in hitting and fielding while Stotsky tops runs and hits. Price features headstands catches and upside down throws. continued on page A.
Coach Graves announced via Temple Telegram that he would not renew his contract at Sul Ross State College and criticized the college’s treatment of football players. He clarified he did not say athletes were treated as thugs and criminals and noted plans to pursue a psychology PhD at the University of Texas before returning to Tempe hospital work.
Alpine Texas has been removed from Mexico's blacklist restricting bracero contracts. U S Department of Labor records cite regional official Roger Huron of El Paso saying Dallas informed him the Mexican government lifted Alpine and nearby communities from the list of ineligible Mexican nationals. The action follows earlier charges of discrimination against Mexicans affecting several Texas towns including Alpine Marfa and other border areas where braceros work on ranches in the Big Bend and Davis Mountains region.
Ray La Beff of Alpine placed first in the 3rd annual Ozona Invitational Golf Tournament by one stroke with a 39. Bernard Raines of Big Spring shot 38 to win overall. Billy Ward of Alpine won the 3rd flight with 44 and Jim Francois of Alpine won the 4th flight with 41.
The Alpine School Board will meet next Thursday to study the proposed budget, which shows an increase of about 9,000 to education after accounting for a 125 operating cost for the new Tax Assessor-Collectors Office at 16 North Street. The plan includes 21 20.92 for administration and tax assessor operations, 220,113 for instruction, and adjustments for pupil transportation, plant operation, and insurance coverage on Alpine School Units.
The Texas Legislature conference committee cut about 1100,000 from state college pay raises and research funding. Instructors will still see 400 to 500 dollar raises, but most research funds were removed. Library and administration funds faced 10 percent and 5 to 10 percent cuts respectively, reducing senior college appropriations by about 11 percent.
Earl Dunn, pastor of Edna Hill Baptist Church in Dublin since 1998, has been named Texas Baptist Student Union director and Bible teacher at Sul Ross College in Alpine. A 1958 graduate of Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, Dunn replaces George Thomason who left to join Midwestern Seminary. Dunn previously led Gentrys Mill Baptist Church in Hamilton and served as supply pastor for the Baptist Chinese Mission in El Paso. He earned a BA from Texas Western College in El Paso in 1954, and he and his wife Paula Beaty have one child.
Senator Ralph Yarborough informed Mayor W E Lockhart that the Farmers Home Administration in Marfa is under review by federal FHA authorities in Washington. The office is slated to close and Yarborough urged FHA leaders to retain the Marfa facility.

The 57th annual Su Ross Reading Conference will run Monday through Wednesday, August 2. Officials will welcome attendees with Sul Ross president Dr. Bryan Wildenthal. Bennett Cooksey leads sessions with a lineup of national and international experts on reading and literature, including Dr. Donald E P Smith Dr. G Robert Carlsen Dé Faye Bumpass and Dr George Spade. Experts address reading disability teaching methods and literature instruction with additional talks by education consultants and publishers.
James H. Gillock of Abilene is named wire chief for Southwestern Bell in Alpine, succeeding Wende Faris who moves to Big Spring as plant foreman. The appointment is effective immediately, with Gillock a 13 year veteran who has held multiple roles in Abilene and served in World War II as a battery commander. He is married with two daughters Sherry Jo aged eight and Ramona Kay aged four.
