The local congregation accepts the National Board of Missions plan for a new church to replace the one destroyed by fire in April. Architect Rev. Fred S Rog and the structure moved from Wink will form a unit of the new building, with the back section relocated for interim use until the main portion is completed.
The column recounts weather debates and public relations jokes involving Lt. George McCadden of the flying school, notes on local booster chatter about the Alpine area, and comments from Coach Graves in Hollywood Florida. It also mentions a Texas Highlands readership, a service column “Following the Flag,” and a pronunciation poll on the word ration.
Pvt. John W. Hill of Alpine was killed in action. His mother Mrs. T. M. Hill of Alpine was officially notified by the Navy. Hill attended Sul Ross College and worked for Central Power and Light Co. before enlisting in the Marines. He served with Col. James Roosevelt's battalion, trained at Oceanside, and earned a platoon honor certificate. He is the first Brewster County man known to die in actual combat in the present war. His mother is expected home soon from Arkansas.
Carvin G Miller son of Mr and Mrs Charles G Miller of Kewanna Indiana is promoted to captain at the Advanced Flying school announced by Col George F Hartman Capt Miller has been posted there since inception and came to the school from Brooks Field San Antonio on September 1 1942 Back our Fighting Men Buy War Bonds and Stamps
West Main avenue welcomes a new Sweet Shop operated by M C Hollinshead replacing the former Sport Gunn business now in the army. Hollinshead offers sandwiches cold drinks and ice cream and plans renovations. He has sold his Western Auto Associate store stake to H J McBride who will run it, with their auto venture dating back to 1939.
Auto owners were warned this week by A. Forrest Hope local deputy collector of U. S. Internal Revenue that $5 Federal Use d Stamps must be purchased at once. It is a violation of the law to operate a motor car without one of these stamps affixed and operators are subject to fine. The stamps may be obtained at the post office.
Sul Ross President H W Morelock urges West Texas superintendents that the college serves democracy by preparing teachers and expanding wartime education. The 1943 44 plan opens September 15 with enhanced facilities, intact faculty, and new equipment. Sul Ross will house about 600 WAACs and continue normal teaching for regular students.
County War Finance chairman G. W. Baines reported sales up to yesterday totaled $10,729.25, exclusive of Alpine and Marathon post offices since July 18. The July quota is $20,500, and officials hope Brewster citizens will buy today and tomorrow to meet it.
APS seeks a phonograph for use in teaching radio code at the flying school. Old radio gear and cast off equipment are also requested. Those with such items may call the Base Communications officer at the school, Marfa 490.
Cal George F Hartman announced a new advanced flying school plan as Class 436 received diplomas. The ceremony included remarks on eight months of service in the South Sereteaeeea theater and Lt Ruiz detailing Hawaii service and a 13 day rescue. An aerial review showcased formation flight with a parade led by cadets and all organizations present.

Miss Katherine Young of Marathon, daughter of Mr and Mrs W E Young, awarded the Ima Hogg Fellowship at Texas University. A former Texas State College for Women student and Phi Upsilon Omicron member, she has dietetic experience in Pine Bluff Arkansas and will study at Texas U next year. She is a niece of W D Moore TSCW professor.
Pastor R L Wittner of the Baptist church reports 18 professions of faith and seven additions during a revival at the Valentine church from July 19 to 25. He also served as superintendent of a Vacation Bible School held in conjunction with the event.
Annual Paisano encampment proceeds amid rationing as about 400 attendees camp on grounds. Dr. Millard A Jenkins substitutes for ill Dr. George W. Truett, with Dr. Perry F. officiating morning and evening. Many youths attend, and a boys and girls program runs with services through Sunday night.
Brewster county men were inducted into the armed forces at Fort Bliss Reception Center on July 22. Alpine residents Leandro Juarez David Aranda Silvas Esteban Orantea Rojo Arcenio Balero Ramirez Adolfo Molinar Terlingua residents Jack Murray Tomas Aguilar Echavarria and Marathon resident Tomas Aguilar Echavarria were listed among inductees. The Army group began a 15 day furlough. the Navy inductees returned to the reception center yesterday.
Aviation Cadet Walter J. Mroczko of Herkimer New York enters the Advanced Flying School here after a wartime career of combat service. He survived being shot down by Japanese guns and drifting in the mid Pacific until rescued by a PBY Navy plane. He served as a crew chief at Hickam Field during Pearl Harbor. He later flew B 17 missions from Midway until his crew faced heavy anti air fire and a long night adrift at sea.
Dedication of Alpine's new USO building will be held next Wednesday with Dr. W W Jackson presenting the building to Mrs Fred B Rogers chairman of the local USO council. The club under YWCA sponsorship will serve three military groups including the RAF advanced flying school between Marfa and Russell. Committees named for the opening include Mrs Geo Baines and Miss Irma Lee BaxTe y. invitations mailed by Mrs Baines. The new USO quarters on North Fifth Street were moved and renovated for USO use with open house 4 to 7 pm and dedication 8 pm.
Alpine will host a noted cameraman from Tor Movietone Newsrest to shoot WAAC footage next week. Plans include a recreational theme featuring physical training and mountain climbing at Indian Lodge and possibly Big Bend. He previously produced a Texas wartime feature titled Along the Texas Fan War Bonds and Stamps.
