Mrs Eric Williams has The Avalanche sent to son Eric J at the U S Naval Training station San Diego Allan L Poage son of Rev and Mrs F R Poage former Alpine residents now in Lordsburg N M has completed the OCS course at Camp Lee Va and has been commissioned a second lieutenant assigned to the Air Forces stationed at Sacramento Calif Allan is a graduate of Sul Ross College and an Alpha Chi Before entering OCS he was stationed at the induction center Fort Bliss for about a year Apprentice Seaman W E Everett Vanney Jr has been assigned to the Seabees and is in training at Camp Perry Va Jack O Hord son of Mr and Mrs Joe Hord has reported for training as a bombardier at Kirtland Field Albuquerque NM advanced school and upon completion of the course there will be commissioned a second lieutenant Henry V Uranga is enrolled in Army Specialized Training program in a pre engineering course at the University of San Francisco He is the son of Clemente J Uranga Alpine South Side merchant Tony Hess with the Seabees in North Africa writes to Mr and Mrs Walter Graef that he recently received 10 issues of The Continued on last page
Alpine community leaders appeal for 1000 to purchase the Mexican Community Center building to continue services. A circular urges 50 people give 10 each and 100 give 5 each. Center runs kindergarten, prenatal care, well baby programs, girls reserve, sewing knitting and English classes, a library, and Red Cross courses with support from local churches and organizations. Contributions may be deposited at the First National Bank.
Opening exercises for WAAC Class No 3 at Sul Ross College were announced for 10 a m with Rev Juaniz delivering the invocation and Dr Morelock welcoming. Homer M Wilson a Brewster rancher and miner born Del Rio 1892 died of a heart attack last week. Funeral services were held in Del Rio with burial in the Mason cemetery after services in Del Rio and in Del Rio. Wilson was a 32nd degree Mason and survived by widow three children mother and siblings.
State directors of the United War Chest of Texas Region 16 were announced by George A. Bier. The board includes C. N. Bassett USO chairman El Paso and Alpine residents Dr. Benjamin F. Berkeley and Gay Meriwether. Region 16 counties are Brewster Culberson El Paso Hudspeth Jeff Davis Loving Pecos Presidio Reeves Ward and Winkler.
Fort Davis date July 21. The Bloys Cowboy Camp Meeting association will hold its fourth annual gathering at Skillman Grove from Tuesday August 17 to Monday August 24. Dr L D Anderson of Fort Worth will be platform manager and serve as a long-time minister. Speeches from Rev S G Posey of Austin First Baptist and Rev Paul E Martin of Wichita Falls represent Baptist and Methodist groups. Dr Samuel L Joekel of Austin, a Presbyterian, returns to lead the Bible lecture hour on the Suffering of the Righteous with Job as base and will hold a ministers’ hour at 5 pm. Rev Richard G Irving, longtime superintendent, has resigned to move to Santa Monica California.
In last week's Ava issue the buyer of Mrs. Desa C Wright’s residence in South Alpine was misstated as Bill Cooper of Marathon. The correct purchaser is Bill Hannold of the Big Bend. Basque whalemen are believed to have fished in Newfoundland waters in the 14th century.
Brewster county citizens show little interest in financing the war effort with first half bond and stamp sales totaling 2798 dollars against a 20500 dollar monthly quota. G V Ines, county War Finance chair, urges residents to send money at a fair interest rate, stressing that soldiers fighting in the Mediterranean and Pacific need financial backing. He asks what residents are doing to avoid letting the boys down.

Alpine chamber of commerce director Glenn Burgess was named a Texas chamber of commerce managers director at a Dallas meeting. Burgess, mayor of the 3rd battalion Texas State Guard, just returned from the Service Command School at Camp Bullis and attended the Southwestern chamber of commerce institute. A flag dance is set for tomorrow at 9 pm at the courthouse with the Serenaters providing music. the public is invited.
Elliott W. Adams district manager of the Bureau of Old Age and Survivors Insurance at San Angelo spent a week here on official business, meeting local officials and reviewing matters related to federal old age programs.
Col. Hartman becomes head of the advanced flying school at the West Coast Training Center succeeding Col. Hoyle. Hartman, 34, is a West Point graduate born in Birds, Indiana, with prior duty at Chico and Randolph. He and his wife Miss Lillian Hubly have four children and an aviation career rooted in Texas training.
Local rains and showers were reported across the Big Bend and Davis mountains area over the past week. Alpine received heavy rain with a severe electrical storm, causing transformer damage and power interruptions. Sul Ross gauge recorded 6.2 inches, among the year's best rains, while other zones reported fair to good range conditions and month totals around 1.6 inches in the Christmas Mountains region.
The 23rd annual Poisono Baptist encampment in Brewster County nine miles west of Alpine begins Monday with an 8 PM service. Despite fuel constraints, all services proceed normally with Dr George W Truett of Dallas preaching evening services and Dr Perry F Webb of San Antonio at morning sessions.
