In 1933 Texas lawmaker Townsend recalls reading a Century Magazine article on the Big Bend by Dr. Robert Hill. He collaborates with Abilene colleague Bob Wagstaff to push preservation bills, expands land grants for Big Bend State Park, and credits Wagstaff for key support in creating what becomes a peace park project between nations.

One-Armed Brewster Lad Wins Scrap Rubber Award

Bonafacio Garcia an 11 year old one armed Mexican boy from Terlingua Brewster county earned a $50 war bond from Radio Station WOAI San Antonio for his scrap rubber drive efforts. Sale of War Bonds and Stamps Lag in Brewster County

Bond and stamp sales for July total $22,176.05 through yesterday, with about $6,000 more needed to meet a $28,100 quota. County chairman G W Baines urges Brewster County citizens to contribute in the coming week, warning August’s quota will be higher. The figure excludes sales after July 15 at Marathon post office.

Encampment Plans Underway At Paisano Camp Grounds

Plans are set for the Paisano Camp near Alpine starting next Monday with expected strong attendance despite travel limits. Dr. George W. Truett and Dr. Perry F. Webb will headline daily services, meals served cafeteria style, and a large modern encampment with about 100 buildings and a new cold storage plant. The event runs through August 5 with free-will offerings for meals.

Draft Takes Big Brewster Group At Fort Bliss

All the men sent to Fort Bliss Sunday were examined and given one furlough until August 4. The entire group was accepted except for three men. Several hundred Brewster county citizens gathered to bid farewell to one of the largest selective service groups yet to leave the county. The crowd blocked traffic around the block as police guided vehicles past the city hall. Company A Texas Defense Guard, with local Latin Americans in uniform, joined in a courtesy to the draftees. The group was split onto three buses and ordered to report to the Fort Bliss Reception Center in El Paso for induction. Names listed include Gonzalo Rodriguez Hardandez and others from Marathon.

Veterinarian to Give Rabies Shots in Alpine Next Week

Alpine officials announce a roaming veterinarian will be at city hall all day Friday July 31 to inoculate dogs for rabies. The fee is 2 dollars per dog, 1.50 for inoculation and 50 cents for registration and a tag. Residents urged to bring pets for inoculation and registration. later drive planned for stray untagged animals.

Brewster County Dem Primary Voter Turnout Near 1940 Levels

Brewster County voters prepared for the Democratic primary with sixty one absentee ballots counted by the county clerk by Wednesday. Through the day, turnout remained under half of the 1940 total of 148 with precinct results listed as East Alpine 26 West Alpine 7 No 2 South Alpine 5 No 3 Terlingua 5 No 4 Marathon 18 No 5 San Vicente none.

Big Bend Post Aids Campaign to Collect Old Records

The Big Bend Post and American Legion urge gathering 2 125 old phonograph records by August 2 to support a national drive for 37 500 000 records. Proceeds from salvaged records will fund new ones for service members. Brewster county voters go to the polls tomorrow for a large primary ballot. Alpine officials led by Mayor L B Starns issued a warning to livestock owners as complaints about loose cattle and stock ran through the city office. Owners were urged to secure animals and avoid damaging yards and gardens, with threats of drastic action if complaints persist.
