Navy Air Cadets Begin Training at Sul Ross and Casparis
Navy air cadets arrived this week to start primary training with ground school at Sul Ross College and flying at Casparis Flying School in Starnsfield. Cadets complete eight weeks of training before a second class. Lieuts Riley and Wallace promoted area enlistment. Eligible ages 18 to 26 require a high school education. interested men should contact the Naval Aviation Cadet Selection Board in Dallas.

Seldon Robinson, head of the physical education department for men at Sul Ross college, left last weekend to report for training in the U S Navy at San Francisco. He volunteered and was accepted with the rank of ensign. Robinson played for the Lobo football team and earned a B S from Sul Ross in 1935. He returned in 1936 as instructor in business administration and assistant to B C Graves. He succeeded Coach Graves as head of the department recently when Graves enlisted. Mrs Robinson has gone to Fort Worth for the duration.

Highway Engineer A. J. Adcock Dies in Grandfalls
Fort Davis July 15 Friends mourn the death of A J Adcock of Grandfalls who died July 11 after a year of poor health. A longtime Texas highway department engineer he served as resident engineer here about 15 years ago and later at Van Horn. He surveyed the Davis Mountains State Park highway and was buried in Grandfalls. Present at the funeral were L E Wood and Otis Carter both highway engineers.

Rainfall in Alpine Area From July Puts Measurable Precipitation

Milky Bulag Mode Census at McDonald Observatory
AUSTIN July 13 A census of the Milky Way is being taken at the University of Texas McDonald Observatory in the Davis Mountains West Texas. Dr G P Kuiper of McDonald and Yerkes observatory said in Austin that in two months he catalogued about 1000 stars bringing observed total since 1939 to ~3000. He said the census will reveal size distance velocity brightness and star types and show the total mass of all stars.

Paving Finished On 5.6 Mile U S Highway 67 Section
The five point six mile pavement project on U S Highway 67 from the Brewster county line to the Santa Fe railroad crossing in Pecos County is complete. Engineer EL Pearce announced the completion, noting it may be the last wartime paving in the county due to fuel and material restrictions. The screenings were at Capitol theatre in Brownsville and rescheduled events supported by local garden clubs and USO. Additional showings occurred in Harlingen Edinburg Falfurrias and Corpus Christi with garden clubs and chambers of commerce coordinating. Audiences noted the cool lofty peaks of the Chisos mountains and the valley tour labeled the first international vacation land on the North American continent.
