Alpine Pastors Schedule Church Loyalty Period

The Alpine Pastors association launches a July and August Church Loyalty period. Congregations are urged to attend and show loyalty to church organizations. A daily 6 pm Call to Prayer will ring bells, with Saturday street services at 4 pm. Everyone is invited to participate and attend services.

Mayor on Vacation Heads to Two Week Trip

Mayor L. J. Starns left Friday afternoon for a two week vacation. He plans to visit his old home in Nashville Tennessee and relatives in Alabama. Acting mayor J. M. Floyd will serve at the Southern Pacific station during his absence. It is Starns first vacation in several years.

Sugar Bonus Issued By OPA For Ration Cards

The Office of Price Administration announced a two pound sugar bonus for very ration card holders valid July 10 to August 22. Householders can obtain the dividend by showing Ration Stamp No 7. Institutional users will get 78 percent of normal sugar use for September and October, while industrial users receive 80 percent. A separate obituary notes Mrs. E P Noble, age 58, died in Victoria after ill health. burial at Port Lavaca.

Marathon Fourth of July at Old Fort Pena a big success

Marathon celebrated the Fourth of July at Old Ft. Pena now Brewster County park with improvements. About 1500 people attended the barbecue and festivities. A goat roping occurred in the afternoon and Friday and Saturday dances drew large crowds. About 47 soldiers are stationed at Ft. Pena.

Paisano encampment dates announced for Paisano Baptist gathering

The 22nd annual Paisano encampment will run July 27 to August and feature daily preaching by Dr. George W. Truett and Dr. Perry F. Webb. Activities include Bible classes, interdenominational hour, missionary society meetings, prayer meetings, and nightly campfire services. New this year are morning encampment Brotherhood and Baptist Student Union conferences. Police conference at Marfa July 18 will discuss the May Act and venereal disease concerns with invited physicians and law enforcement officers urged to attend.

New Postage Rate for Books Adopted by Alpine Post Office

The Alpine post office announces a new mailing rate for books. Books with reading matter only and 24 pages or more now pay three cents per pound, replacing the former one and one half cents per pound rate. This applies anywhere in the United States.

Scrap Rubber Campaign Ends Today in Brewster County

Brewster county reports about 85 000 pounds of scrap rubber, roughly 14 pounds per person for its 6 000 residents, exceeding national per capitas. J B Keefer says the drive ends today after a 10 day extension by President Roosevelt. Citizens urged to cooperate to avoid tire shortages for nonessential cars and armed forces. Summer Tourists Find Accommodations in Big Bend Park Area

The Big Bend chamber of commerce announced ample lodging for summer visitors. Completed tourist cottages in the park offer hot water and cooking facilities, with extra sleeping space in former CCC quarters under caretaker Lloyd Wade. New tourist courts at Terlingua and the Waddy Burnham ranch at the Chisos entrance provide options, while Glenn Springs ranch near Marathon and Lewis Lewenthal near Castalon also offer guest provisions.

Alpine post office receives new V Mail stationery to aid letters to U S armed forces abroad. The system uses microfilm where available to expedite dispatch and cut mail weight. Acute housing crunch for defense workers in Alpine

The Alpine housing crisis worsens as nearly all listed houses and apartments are rented while workers arrive for defense projects. Marfa reports no vacant homes and women clerical staff face acute shortages in both towns. A housing committee is formed by the chamber of commerce chaired by Roy Whiteside with Dom Adams Fritz Weyerts Mrs. Jack Cross and Jerome Kerby. The group will survey homes and may station staff at the chamber to assist worker housing needs.

Brewster county starts July bond and stamp drive as Frank Scofield sets the quota at $20,100. County chairman G W Baines reports $16,000 in sales so far and urges citizens to meet or exceed the month’s target, noting June’s was heavily oversubscribed.

Alpine observed a quiet Independence Day with subdued fireworks and limited retail hours. Residents joined celebrations at Marathon Marfa Presidio and Pecos, mostly at Marathon’s Fort Pena Colorado county park, amid a subdued local mood.

Alpine Masons Install Officers for New Year

Officers for the Masonic year starting June 24, 1942, were installed at a closed Alpine Lodge No. 766 A F and A M Bt meeting at the Masonic hall last Thursday night. In addition to officers announced last week, A. J. Joyce became senior deacon with George Pugh as junior deacon, L. D. Morris and R. W. Felts as stewards, Don Littleton as the installing officer.

Ranchogas Company Buys Swan Gas Business

The Ranchogas company announced the purchase of the Swan Gas Co butane gas business. It has moved from Fifth Street to the Swan Gas Co quarters north of the courthouse. A. T. Swan, owner of Swan Gas Co, recently bought a business in El Paso to relocate and crate.

14 Rotary Club Members Post Perfect Attendance for Year

Fourteen Alpine Rotary members achieved a 100 percent attendance record at 52 weekly luncheons in the year ending June 30. The group posted a district high attendance rate of 99.19 percent. Members with perfect attendance include L. B. Starns, Don Litt Uleton, Dom Adams, Milton Smith, J. W. Prater, John Newell, T. Beard, Ab Turney, Santiago Campbell, Dennis Brown, Pete Funk, George Koury, Aubrey Webb, and Nig Bennett. Others missing only one meeting were John Gentry, Shirley Seales, Joe Wright, Dick Bankhead, Frank McCollum, Arthur Owens. Club membership ranged from 34 to 45.
