Sul Ross Board Approves Construction Bid and New Faculty
Sul Ross State University’s Board of Regents in Austin approved a $258,317 contract with Guldemann Construction Co. of El Paso to renovate the Administration Building with work to begin Sept. 15. The board also added four new faculty members: W. Don Chandler, Gerald Dumas, Randy Jackson, and Mrs. Mabel Lowry, effective Sept. 1, 1970.

Miner Industries buys Study Butte mine with full production planned
Mineral Industries Inc of Oklahoma City and Salt Lake City have purchased the Study Butte mine from Diamond Shamrock Corp. The change of ownership effective July 1, 1970, brings plans to reach full production within 60 days under manager Bill Beebe and superintendents Oscar Cobos and Tom Chapman. The initial work includes sinking the Dallas shaft to below 400 feet and refurbishing the furnace, with ore from upper levels stockpiled until the furnace is ready. Salt Lake City office led by Scott Smith and David Rovig oversees all mining activities.

White Throws First Pitch at Alpine Internationals
The 1970 Alpine Internationals baseball team hosted U S Rep Richard C White of El Paso as a guest at Kokernot Field in Alpine. First pitch opened tournament play with White throwing out the ball. Valenzuela and Dickson earned All Tournament honors.

Alpine Men's City Golf Championship Opens With 40 Players
The Alpine Country Club hosts 40 golfers in the Alpine Men's City Golf Championship starting Saturday July 18 with a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Qualifying rounds ran July 11 and continue Friday July 17. Tournament director Richard Harvey notes greens damage was minor and repairable. event features five flights of eight players each and 54 holes of match play.

Free kindergarten program offered for 5 year olds
Alpine Public Schools will restart a free full day kindergarten at Central School on Monday July 30. Registration runs weekdays through July 2024 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Transportation help available by calling 837-2132 for home registration. Eligibility includes children born Sept 2 1964 through March 31 1965, age five with five months. About 25 of 50 slots filled. Programs aim to develop physical, intellectual, social and emotional skills and prepare children for future learning. Birth certificates needed at registration. child attendance not required at registration time.
