Bids planned for divided U S Highways through Alpine

Texas Highway Dept official Joe Battle set Aug 25 or 26 for bid letting on the U S 67 90 division project through Alpine. City Council read Battle's letter requesting escrow funds to cover sidewalks curbs and driveways, while newer state policy shifts cost to the state for replacing existing curbs and sidewalks. The council approved the escrow agreement.

Little Cowboys versus All Stars at Kokernot Field Saturday

Alpine’s Little Cowboys meet Fort Stockton All Stars in a nine inning game at Kokernot Field at 3 p.m. Saturday. No admission charge announced. The team holds a 10 win 1 loss record and advances to regional playoffs starting July 27 in Crane.

Enrollments Reach 1068 for Sul Ross Summer Session

Sul Ross State University reports 1068 students for the second summer session spanning Alpine main campus and Fort Stockton extension. Classes run July 14 to August 14 with finals and summer commencement on August 14. Fall registration is set for August 31 to September 2 and classes begin September 3.

Alpine City approves stream gaging station near Alpine Creek

The Alpine City Council approved a U.S. Geological Survey stream gaging station on Alpine Creek near 12th Street and West Avenue G. The site will include a 4 by 4 foot shelter and buried conduit to measure water flow for flood protection design. The plan received unanimous council approval.

Paisano encampment set to open July 27 near Alpine

The 53rd Paisano Baptist Encampment will begin July 27 at the camp grounds 11 miles west of Alpine on US 67 and 90, with 1000 to 1200 attendees expected through August 2. Early arrivals may attend a Sunday service July 26 led by Rev. Lloyd Conner.

Alpine Rotary to Host Dr L Montagno Speaker Today

Dr L Montagno a Mount Union College history professor and director of non western studies will speak at the Alpine Rotary Club luncheon at the Ponderosa Restaurant today. Since 1968 he has served as vice president of the Association of Colleges and Universities for International Intercultural Studies. He was a Fulbright Lecturer in Helsinki 1958 59 and visiting history professor in Karachi 1960 62 with travels to Scandinavia Russia Hong Kong Nepal and other regions.

Survey Finds Decline in Trans-Pecos Antelope Population

The 1969 to 1970 aerial and vehicle censuses show a 17 percent drop in adult pronghorns in the Trans-Pecos area. Texas Parks and Wildlife official Tom Hailey says dry range conditions drove most losses, especially among adult bucks. The 1968 buck count was 7,523 versus 6,380 in 1970, with 1969 hunter harvest around 800, similar to 1968.

Big Bend Summer Theatre Play Schedule This Week and Next

The Big Bend Summer Theatre lists a sequence of free outdoor performances. From Thursday July 23 to Saturday August 1 the lineup includes The Male Animal Blithe Spirit Pools Paradise Harvey and Luv in 2s with performances slated for evenings at the new outdoor venue.
