The City agrees to provide Meriwether water at up to four delivery points on the water system, within or outside City limits, and to furnish water at prevailing rates. The City may also dig or sink a water well on land of its choosing to supply additional quantities.
Alpine School Board approved contracts for four new teachers: Carolyn Spencer to replace J C Walker in Central 5th grade, Faye Davis to replace Natalie Gunter in high school girls PE, Mary Ola Kay to replace Johnnie Neely in Central 2nd grade, Shirley Stephenson to replace Dorothy Perryman in Central girls PE. Mrs Powell, a drama teacher whose students won a state championship last year, will teach in Odessa schools next year.
Alpine residents reported about 1,000 in insurance settlements after a severe last month hailstorm. Many homeowners hire roofing crews to replace damaged roofs while some buy new roofs below claim value. Owners accept cash for damaged cars to avoid dent out values. some travel to nearby Fort Stockton and Ruidosa for scenic tours.
Johnny Turner, a Cisco senior, will perform a two piano recital at 8 p.m. in Sul Ross College main auditorium. The program includes contemporary and standard two piano works, plus Latin American pieces. Wayne Bresett assists at the second piano. Turner invites the public to attend.
Local report lists officers Major W S Powers Captain Jack A Phillips Captain James Irion Lt Cecil J Ward and Lt Jim Freeman among participants with several listed from Alpine and Marfa including Fred Dumas and F C Valenzuela in a group operation drill set for tonight in the region.
Tony Baker will start for the Cowboys at Kokernot Field night. The team lists 30 wins this season and an overall home attendance near 13,837 through 35 openings. Don Mack and Bill Jensen return to active and inactive lists respectively. Charlie Schilling rests a bruised foot.
Five officials of Group 1 CAP at Maria Municipal and El Paso Squadron visit Big Bend Civil Air Patrol to review new search and rescue supplies. The event included CAP members and two guests meeting with local Big Bend Squadron leaders to discuss equipment and readiness.
Major William S Powers announced support for the Brewster County Chapter and outlined needs for the coming year at the American Red Cross annual meeting at Sul Ross. Duane Smith received a special citation for his fund drive work as officers and committee chairs were announced and reports presented.
Kenneth Mellard thanked an El Paso group for providing a Jeep trailer truck field kitchen and search and rescue gear to the Big Bend Squadron. Leaders say 15,000 square miles lack communications and urge more radio equipment as 18 members meet with the donors.
A three week Red Cross senior life saving course starts 5 20 pm on Monday July 27 with Elbert Echols and Shirley Stevenson as instructors. Daily one hour sessions run at that time. Applicants must be at least 16 and pass swimming tests July 23 and 24. Contact Echols or Miss Stevenson at Sul Ross State College for details.

Mexican officials have not explained why Alpine Texas was placed on a blacklist as other Texas towns including Marfa Lubbock and Seguin were likewise listed. Officials say only Washington can provide the reason while Mexican authorities report a forwarded investigation.
A dentist health education program is set for July 23 to 25 at Sul Ross State College with lectures by Gertrude Linn and others. The event runs daily in Room 10 of the Big Bend Museum from 9 to 11 45 am and 1 15 to 4 pm and is open to the public. A barbecue will follow at Prude Ranch north of Fort Davis.
Henry Bailey will be installed as commander of Big Bend Post No 79 American Legion in joint ceremonies with Auxiliary officers. New officers include vice commanders Bill and Terry Oliver, adjutant Elvie Williams, historian Anita Hollis, sergeant at arms Bud Phillips, chaplain Peyton Cain, child welfare Jimmy Eichholtz, service Fritz Weyerts, finance John Skinner. Executive committee members are Sherman Newsom, David Kokernot, Lon Stillwell, M L Hopson, and Jim Parker. Bailey Eichholtz and Hopson plan to attend the state convention in San Antonio Friday through Sunday.
Firpo Townsend, a member of the First Baptist Church, died in San Antonio following an exploratory operation this week at Santa Rosa Hospital. The information came from Nace Clifford. Townsend and Go, Figo Townsend were residents of Alpine with a San Antonio address at 152 Mardell.
Peyton Cain has been approved by the school board to attend the annual Army Reserve camp at Fort Bliss from August 9 to 24. The trip will involve training and duties tied to Fort Bliss.
Foreman Mayo at The Avalanche cuts finger in backshop. Daughter Ellen suffers deep leg gashes after walking into a plate glass door at Filiott's Superette. Ellen required several stitches at Brewster County Memorial Hospital.
