Alpine saw its biggest weekend crowd in years as July 4 visitors filled all hotels and motels. D M Bennett reports many visitors extended their stay, drawn by top semi pro baseball at Kokernot Field and a Legion fireworks display. Local operators called nearby towns for accommodations.

Mother of Phil Avant Dies in San Antonio
Mrs. Mramily Florence Avant, mother of Phil Avant of Alpine, died Friday July 4 in a San Antonio hospital at age 70. Burial services were held yesterday in Del To. She is survived by husband Jesse L. Avant, four daughters including Mrs. Tom Oliver and Mrs. Clyde Whistler, two sons, and many grandchildren and a great grandchild.

Alpine City Raises Rent On Old School House
The city of Alpine boosted Uncle Sam’s rent for the old Avenue D school house from 125 to 200 dollars per month this week. The City Commission awarded 707.40 dollars in repairs to W. J. Vannoy the only bid received. The building houses the Soil Conservation Service the International Water and Boundary Commission ASC and is leased to the General Services Administration under a 3 year lease starting July 1 1958 at 200 dollars monthly if repairs are completed.
