Clean-Up Campaign for Alpine Texas February

A Garden Club led campaign urges Alpine residents to designate February as clean-up month. Remove tin cans bottles dead limbs dead weeds and webs. Collect trash in piles or containers and burn carefully on a quiet day to avoid fires. Aim to make Alpine the cleanest town in Texas.

President's Birthday Ball at Courthouse in Alpine

Marathon and Alpine promote the annual President's birthday ball to be held at the courthouse in Alpine Saturday night. Tickets on sale now with a large turnout expected weather permitting. Half the proceeds stay in Brewster county while the other half goes to the national Infantile Paralysis Foundation.

Tourists Want What the Southwest Offers Says Thompson

Hollis Thompson vice president of American Airlines forecast a bright future for the Association of Southwest Chambers of Commerce after touring West Texas New Mexico and Arizona with L P Bloodworth of El Paso chamber. He told Alpine CC members on January 20 that broad local support is essential to bring large crowds and growth to the Southwest.

Completion fuels tourist boom at Carlsbad Caverns says Col. Boles

Col. Thomas Boles, superintendent of Carlsbad Caverns, predicts a major rise in visitors with the completion of the Big Bend national park area near the Rio Grande. He notes 241,500 tourists already came to the Caverns last year and envisions the region becoming a world mecca with two state parks and an observatory boosting travel.

Fort Davis Limescale: Limpia Road Contract Awarded

Hol land Page of Austin won the low bid for six miles of state highway No. 17 improvement and paving from Fort Davis courthouse to beyond the apple orchards in Limpia. The $76,237.08 project includes widening near the courthouse and the Y, straightening curves, grading, and drainage, with an expected mid February start. Engineers’ estimate was about $75,000 amid rising material costs. Ed Page, experienced road builder, will oversee the work and may relocate to Fort Davis for several months with Mrs. Page.

Highland Hereford Breeders Elect Officers At Annual Meet

The Highland Hereford Breeders Assn. elected officers at its annual meeting held at Marts last Saturday. George Jones was re elected president with W R Mitchell as honorary vice president and C K Smith as director. A resolution urged fair prices for meat and commodities and opposition to price rises. The association kept a 13 cent per head levy with 10 cents to the association 2 to the National Livestock Assn. and 1 to the National Meat Board.

Sul Ross College spring enrollment underway this week

Enrollment for the spring term at Sul Ross State College is underway with CA A student pilot training unit registration in progress. The spring class may include ten students and two military science courses are offered. college credit is available for flying and training. Alpine Ranchman Sells 11 Head of Fine Bulls

W A Daugherty of Ay breeder of fine Hereford cattle reports sales of six top two year old registered bulls to Baylor Koontz and five two year old bulls to Crawford Troell Oakville Texas. Bulls to be placed with quality cows on the Brown ranch south of Alpine. Demand for bulls is the best in years.

Poll Tax Payments Progress in Alpine County

A total of 534 poll tax receipts have been issued as of yesterday noon with today’s deadline to allow voting in 1941 elections. The county’s 1941 total is about one third of 1940’s 1602 receipts. Precincts report: East Alpine 140, West Alpine 142, South Alpine 65, Terlingua 22, Marathon 163, San Vicente 7, Alien 4.

Escaped Injury in Wreck Near Ft Stockton

Mr and Mrs J C Weston escaped injury when their car overturned on the Alpine Fort Stockton road about ten miles from Ft Stockton on Wednesday. The Buick sedan reportedly rolled three times after hitting a slick spot and was badly damaged. Knoxville was referenced as the first Tennessee capital.

Interesting History of Old Adobe Ruins in Masquiz Canyon

Old-Time Ft. Davis resident recalls a vanishing adobe near the King ranch in Masquiz Canyon. The structure was once a country schoolhouse built in October 1881, likely the first west of the Pecos. Builders were early settlers P. J. Pruett, Jim Dawson, Cab Nations, Sam and George Roberts.

Sul Ross seeks state funds to expand Dept of Animal Husbandry
