Alpine has seen $71 875 in Defense Bond sales since last May as reported by county Defense Bond chairman G. W. Baines. Excludes Marathon post office sales for which figures are not yet available. The 1942 county quota is $298,000.
J. W. Frazer county clerk has been appointed explosives licensing agent for Brewster County by the Bureau of Mines US Department of Interior. The act of Dec 26 1941 requires regulation of all explosive purchase sale and use to prevent ruse by hostile or disloyal persons.
About 100 mounted Cowboys and ranchmen from Jeff Davis Brewster and Presidio counties gathered at Skillman Grove for a home guard style defense readiness event. Adjutant General J Watt Page and Juarez garrison General Jaime Quinones attended. George Jones of Marfa chaired the riders with Bob Bledsoe as secretary as they demonstrated guerrilla tactics amid rugged terrain. Leaders include sheriffs Clarence Hord Jim Walker and Joe Bunton.
Tickets for the President's ball at Sul Ross gym tonight are selling well, with the Sul Ross orchestra providing music. Local Lions club handles sales while Dr. B F Berkeley notes strong attendance. Miss Marie Simpson leads Marathon sentiment and Alpine joins the celebration. The college orchestra will play old time and model music for 50 cents per person, with a floor show planned. Bridge and 42 also available at the Holland hotel, per Mrs J W Shepperd. Mrs Alan Fraser chairs the women's division.
The Cemetery association calls a meeting for Wednesday February 4 at City Hall at 7 20 p m Officers were not elected at the January 23 gathering due to low attendance All lot owners are urged to attend Bil Allen ranked first in the Air Corps and was accepted at Biggs Field Fort Bliss earlier this week His brother Reuben of Marfa was also accepted Both will receive a 30 day furlough then report to Kelly Field San Antonio Mrs Bill Allen and their son will reside with her parents in Fort Stockton during Bills absence.
Eight hundred ninety poll tax receipts and exemption certificates had been issued in the county, about 360 more than last year and 700 under 1940. The payment deadline to vote in primaries and the general election is tomorrow, with a warning to avoid a last minute rush and note that tomorrow is the final date for property taxes without penalty.
Al Pine postoffice had sold 625 Federal car stickers by Wednesday afternoon, with 400 more expected before the Feb 1 deadline. Postmaster Annie K. Turney reports, noting stamps cost 2.09 dollars plus one cent postage for a card to the federal tax collector in Austin. New stickers at end of fiscal year June 30 will be valid 12 months and cost 5 dollars.
Gruesome incident in Alpine area as 118 goats, about 1700 head arriving from New Mexico, were killed or injured by stray dogs in Santa Fe shipping pens. A police dog was killed. ranchers estimate losses near $600 and vow to curb the dog nuisance with a city roundup and heightened enforcement by officers and Rangers.
J H Funk aged 77 longtime Alpine resident died Monday after an operation last Saturday. Born December 12 1864 in Zrath county he ranched here until recent years. Funeral Tuesday at 2 30 PM at the Methodist church with Rev Ray McGrew and Rev E B Isaacks officiating. Interment Elm Grove Cemetery. Survivors include widow Dana a daughter Mrs Charles Livingston a son Thomas two more daughters and a brother Isaac Funk of San Angelo. Out of town relatives listed. Also notes W E Noah injured contractor improving at Alpine hospital.
Cas Edwards, chairman of the county rationing board, said February quotas are down about 50 percent from January. The January quota issued through Wednesday included 40 tires and 36 tubes from 41 tires. February calls for roughly six passenger car tires, 20 truck tires, and 20 tubes with praise for citizen cooperation.
Grass fires Tuesday afternoon and night burned over several sections of pasture near Altuda about 15 miles east of Alpine. The blaze started near the highway and moved north across the Gage estate Laucier pasture into the John F Lane Emison pasture, damaging pastureland in multiple sections.

More than half of the 708000 acres needed for Big Bend National Park are under option or owned by the state. About 250000 acres have contracts at prices aligned with the park board appraisal. Options will be exercised after litigation over the project is settled, as landowners in several states resist negotiation.
Biologist Dr C E Sperry argues that guayule Parthenium argentatum native to the Big Bend area of Texas could supply seed for a new domestic rubber industry. He favors planting 75,000 acres in suitable, well drained, low rainfall slopes near Marathon and Alpine to expand native guayule rather than removing plants from the wild.
Alpine high school through the vocational agriculture department will launch a new 10 week defense program shop course in elementary woodworking. Ralph Peters, local builder, will teach evenings from 7 to 10. The course runs Monday through Friday for 10 weeks, totaling 150 hours. Students completing 120 hours earn a diploma of recognition with no tuition. Open to any interested former students, first meeting set Monday at 7 in the high school college shop room.
