Alpine Junior High to Host One-Day Cage Meet Tomorrow
Alpine Junior High hosts its ninth annual two-tiered junior basketball tournament tomorrow from 7:20 AM to 8:36 PM, featuring two meets for big and little boys. Alpine’s big squad suffers from Winkler’s foot trouble and sniffles among teammates, while the younger team, mostly eighth graders, aim to compete. Morning games schedule includes 7:20, 8:00, 8:26, 9:12 and 9:48 AM with afternoon games at 2 PM. consolation finals start 6:12 PM with several championships, and admission is 50 cents for the full meet or 20 cents per session.

Former Alpine resident J L Anderson died in Rock Springs on January 24 after several months of ill health. He and his wife moved to Rocksprings recently. Survivors include his widow and three children, among them Andy Anderson of Sanderson, a former Alpine resident.

Poll taxes paid by Brewster County voters in two-day rush
Brewster county citizens rushed to pay poll taxes last Friday and Saturday. About 1,430 receipts and exemption certificates were issued, raising the year’s total near 1,430 and leaving roughly 200 older voters as potential participants in the upcoming primary. Poll taxes by precinct show East Alpine 376, West Alpine 308, South Alpine 302, Terlingua 70, Marathon 316, San Vicente 19, Alien 4. Exemptions totaled 37.

Former Alpine Attorney J A Gillett Dies in El Paso
J A Gillett aged 77 prominent El Paso attorney and brother of the late F E Gillett died in El Paso last Friday and was buried there Tuesday. Former Alpine resident he served as county attorney in early Alpine days then practiced law in Pecos and Marfa before moving to El Paso in 1910. Mrs F E Gillett and son Bawin attended the funeral.

Birthday Ball Net Brings In 107 Dollars For Charity
Gross receipts from the president's birthday ball in Brewster county last Friday night totaled 165.25 for two orchestras and janitor fees leaving a net balance of 107.25 after taxes. After taxes the proceeds will split between the National foundation and the local crippled children fund. Two dances were held at the Sul Ross gymnasium and courthouse. ladies' events included bridge and 42 hotel games. Marathon folks supported the event and Pine Alpine cooperated by foregone local celebration. Hotel games contributors exceeded 20 dollars. Dr. Berkeley thanked sponsors Mesdames Shepard, Harris, McCollum, and Edgar Martin, Holland hotel, merchants, Lions club member Wally Davis, Mrs. Alan Fraser, Marie Simpson, Marathon chairman, and the public.

McKinley Residence Underway on College Hill
Work began last week on a new seven room two bath rock veneer residence for Mr and Mrs R W McKinley on East Avenue C Alpine. J E Monteith of Big Spring is contractor. The couple, former Alpine residents, plan to move back upon completion. Mr McKinley previously worked for Newell Oil Co.

Auto Stamps Sold At Alpine Postoffice
A total of 1065 federal auto stamps were sold at the Alpine postoffice up to Wednesday afternoon. The stamps cost car owners 2.09 dollars each and expire June 30. A new stamp must be bought costing 5 dollars, running through the government fiscal year starting July 1.

Campaign to Collect Scrap Metal in County
A countywide scrap metal drive sponsored by the local AA A office was announced this week. Ranchers and others are urged to haul metal to designated sites in Marathon or Alpine for the Brewster County Red Cross to deliver to the government. Proceeds go to the Red Cross. dealers nearby are also buying metal for resale, with the nearest dealer at Me Camey.

Merchants Consider New Time Change for Noon Hour
A Tuesday meeting at the chamber of commerce discussed the new time change. Twenty five merchants school and college officials and others supported observing 1 to 2 p m as the noon hour due to class schedules at city schools and Sul Ross college. Texas Supreme Court Refuses Review on Big Bend Land Purchase
The Texas Supreme Court declined to review lower court rulings upholding a 1 500 000 appropriation to buy land for Big Bend National Park. A H King of Throckmorton sought an injunction to stop warrants from paying for park land. The State Parks board has a purchasing office in Alpine acquiring options on about 638 000 acres to be added to the park.
