A Brewster County column scolds unnecessary government paperwork while praising Red Cross War Relief over-subscription records. It urges payment of poll taxes before the election and urges support for defense bonds as the nation prioritizes war efforts.
The cemetery association will meet Friday night January 23 at city hall at 7 30 for electing officers. Members urged to attend as important policies and matters will be discussed.
W J Newell was re elected president of the Alpine chamber of commerce at the annual meeting in the Sul Ross cafeteria Tuesday night. Nelson Lee Je was chosen vice president and Roy Whiteside treasurer. Five new directors were elected D C Littleton Wally Davis E C Coleman R M Bankhead and A J Parkhurst. The treasurer’s office was created by constitutional amendment. The group served 103 plates and prepared a written year in review summary. District officials and supporters attended and spoke on the Big Bend park and highway projects.
Alpine High Bucks rise to top of conference after two wins and a 3 game streak. They defeated Sanderson 26 24 after a 17 13 second string loss, led 17 10 at half, and briefly trailed late. They beat Fort Davis 30 14, with key players out. Next host Valentine, then Marfa visits for two games. Public urged to attend Sul Ross gym.
Jon Sublett, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wallace Sublett, has been accepted as an aviation cadet in the Air Corps and stationed at Kelly Field, San Antonio. Raymond Sublett, the other son, is in the U S Naval Reserve stationed at San Diego California.
Federal auto stickers, required on all cars after February 1 to show tax payment, had not been received at the Alpine post office as of yesterday. Owners will pay $2.09 for the stickers, expiring June 30, 1942, after which a full year tax of $5 is due. Texas auto licenses go on sale February 1 with April 1 as the final deadline to register and obtain plates.
Fort Davis January 21 A state game department employee released nearly 50 antelopes on the J W Merrill and Son ranch in Jeff Davis County. Twenty were near the senior Merrill home and 29 near Limpia canyon by the younger Merrill. The herd diminished after panther predation and fear, with 2 3 years passing. The 49 moved from the Fisher ranch southwest of Marfa where about 400 were trapped, ranch manager Henry Fletcher says there are still antelopes on Fisher pastures.
R J Kidd athletic director reports to Superintendent Bankhead that Iraan High forfeited the December 5 bi district game after refusing to obey a State Executive Committee order granting Alpine the win. The action completes the 1942 football season records.
With eight days left to pay poll taxes for 1941 only 190 Brewster county residents had submitted payments by Wednesday noon. Saturday January 31 is the final date to qualify to vote this election year with many officers to be chosen. Citizens are urged to pay polls and property taxes early to avoid a last minute rush and confusion.
Cattlemen and employees from Presidio and Brewster counties rendezvoused at Bloys camp ground between Marfa and Fort Davis for a day of maneuvers with horse, rifle, and trailer. The Highland Hereford Rough Rivers group formed during the annual Highland Hereford Breeders Association session to prepare a mobile defense effort.
Plans for the President's Birthday ball in Brewster County include a January 30 event at Sul Ross gymnasium. Dr. Berkeley leads the staging with Lions Club’s Wally Davis as vice-chairman and Mrs. Alan Fraser heading the women’s division. The observance supports President Roosevelt’s drive against infantile paralysis, urging strong community enlistment and jubilee celebration. Marathon plans were not finalized.
No definite word on safety has arrived for two Brewster county men in the U S Navy serving in the Far East. Edgar N Langley, son of E P Langley of Mart and former Marathon resident, last spoke Nov 26 and is believed on Wake Island or later moved toward Japan. A Navy note says he was not listed among casualties. A N Southall Jr son of A N Southall of Eagle NM and former Alpine resident also served in the Navy and was at Manila for a period. Last reports two to three weeks ago indicated he had not been heard since the wartime outbreak.
This week announces a change in ownership and management of the Big Bend Ab tract company effective January 19. Milton Gilmer, longtime principal owner and manager, has disposed of his interest and the business will be managed by E Milton Smith with Mrs. Smith in charge of the office. Gilmer’s plans for the future are indefinite. Smith will continue to operate his furniture business.
The Wyoming Hereford ranch in Cheyenne raised the grand champion load of Hereford bulls purchased by H. L. Kokernot & Son of Alpine at the Western National Livestock show in Denver. Kokernot Jr. returned from the show. they paid $750 per head for 10 prize winners and will place them with their registered herd.
The Fort Stockton Pioneer notes that the State Highway Department ordered immediate planning for paving U S Highway 67 from Fort Stockton toward the county line and beyond toward Dallas and Mart. Judge H H Bute views progress on right of way talks. preliminary engineering may begin while awaiting exact specifications and Austin guidance.
Mr. Mitchell, a vocational agricultural teacher, outlined industry trends aligning jobs with worker skills. Big business uses tests to gauge personality and intelligence, a message praised by PTA members focused on child centered schools. Mrs. J. M. Floyd announced National PTA in San Antonio and a district convention in El Paso. The sixth grade entertained, winning the attendance award with a representation of 68 percent.
Brewster County reports the War Relief fund reached 2023.30 dollars, about 70 percent of the quota, with 24 more contributors from Alpine and Marathon and donations from Marathon School grades. County chairman Mrs. Homer Graham said contributions continue as solicitations stay open.

Obituary note says Mrs. T. B. Yolly died in Houston after living in Alpine for years and moving there recently. Survivors include husband and two children, daughter Miss Ethel and son Ait, both of Houston.
Clear, snappy weather has gripped the Texas Highlands for two weeks with ice on fourteen mornings and heavy frosts. Rising mid day temperatures bring brief warmth but lingering chill remains as frosts persist across mornings.
Two autos stolen in Alpine around midnight last Saturday were found within a few hours, both with minor damage. A practically new Chrysler stolen from W. H. Terry Jr. on West College Avenue was found next morning six miles east of Marfa on U.S. Highway 90, undamaged but with the tank dry. a jacket and items remained. Earl Bowers’ car stolen nearby at about the same time was found next afternoon a few blocks away, engine running but battery dead, otherwise little damage. No arrests reported.
