Texas tourism ad to reach millions nationwide

The Texas Tourist Development Agency launches a coordinated program to promote Texas, featuring the Trans-Pecos mountains and the Chisos Basin in ads. A James Standfield photograph will appear in National Geographic February, Southern Living March, and Newsweek March 16, reaching about 11.8 million readers in the Midwest and South.

Alpine Native Named District Census Chief

Conrad P. Ramirez of El Paso has been named district manager for the 1970 Census of Population and Housing in Brewster Culberson El Paso Hudspeth Jeff Davis Loving Pecos Presidio Reeves Terrell Ward Winkler. Ramirez will supervise 24 crew leaders and 355 census takers from the El Paso district office starting January 26.

City of Alpine invites bids for a used bulldozer to bury garbage to comply with a new state law. Mayor Homer Hudgins and officials viewed a unit in Albuquerque. Bids open February 10. An extension until July 1, 1970 was granted due to equipment costs.

City Home Rule Group Names Leaders For New Committees

Howard Hardegree was named chairman of the citys home rule committee and formed two panels to study home rule and general law city forms. Dr Ida Vernon heads the general law study with members including Bob Lafarelle and Roger Towns. Sam Thomas resigns from the home rule panel with a successor to be named at the February 3 council meeting.

Knights of Columbus fundraiser aids Mexican family in Alpine

Rev. Robert Calles of Our Lady of Peace Church says Mr. Palma, a Mexican citizen, suffers 90 percent burns from an Alpine accident and his wife and two daughters lack food and shelter. The Knights of Columbus in Alpine start a Needy Family Fundraiser inviting contributions by calling, delivering, or mailing donations to Father Calles at the church.

Sul Ross State University Enrolls Record Spring Class

Sul Ross State University reports a spring enrollment of 2,188 students, a 4 percent rise and 81 more attendees than spring 1969. President Norman L. McNeil says the gain reflects normal university growth, with a 10 percent increase since 1968.

Voter Registration Deadline This Weekend

Texas voters face a January 31 registration deadline announced by Secretary of State Marin Dies Jr. Eligible residents 21 or older must register at county tax offices with deputies in many counties. Those over 60 in small towns or rural areas must re register yearly under new law. Those turning 21 in 1970 can register before their birthday and have the date marked on their certificate. Parties and civic groups aim for over 4 million registered voters this year.

Sul Ross State Girls Volley Team Set for Region Meet in Austin

Sul Ross State University girls volleyball team, ranked No 1 by USVBA, will compete in the Region 1X United States Volleyball Association tournament in Austin on February 21 after winning the Region XIII tourney in Los Angeles January 23 24 with two wins one loss and one tie. Other Sul Ross players named include McReavy Peppler Redel Stamford Esparza McGahon Courtney Kelly Rochen Whitley Steed McPeak. Sul Ross hosts Region IX on March 20 with California teams invited.
