Dorothy McBride filed for mayor as Homer Hudgins plans to retire from the council when the new mayor takes office after the April election. The filing deadline is 6 pm March 4, and terms for several council seats were set with changes to filing fees and term lengths.
The Department of Housing and Urban Development awards Alpine a 234100 grant to improve water and sewer systems. The city will replace septic tanks and cess pools and install proper sewage disposal. City officials had applied in 1966 and earlier received 38440 under Public Law for sewer plant work.
Mrs. Arlo Gill's request to rezone her Harrison and East Avenue D property from R1 to C-2 was rejected after residents across the street circulated a 25-name petition. The council, while denying the rezone, approved a temporary mobile home permit for W L Barber at 601 N 2nd St to cover his daughter's college period.
Councilman Paul Vogt urged Alpine residents at Tuesday’s meeting to keep lids on trash cans to prevent windblown garbage and reduce complaints. He noted the sanitation department reports many people leave lids off, risking litter and a city ordinance requiring tops on 610 garbage containers.
Edwin Hockaday Fowlkes 62 dies in El Paso. Services set for 10 a m Friday at St James Episcopal Alpine with Rev Schmidt of St Clement s El Paso officiating. Cremation in Albuquerque. Survivors include wife Gail daughters and five sons. Contributions to American Cancer Society.
Alpine Bucks defeated Fabens Wildcats 42-24 to tie for first in the GAA race with the Marfa Shorthorns. Tony Enciso scored 23 points while Guillermo Gonzales Steve Neu and Jim Pattillo led rebounds. Alpine to play Canutillo next.
Ten candidates filed with Red Pattillo Brewster County Democratic chairman for the 1970 elections. Incumbents Avora Owens Hallie Stillwell Sara Pugh C E Patterson and George Baker seek reelection. Sheriff F E Riggs files. Jim Skinner currently fills sheriff until Jan 1 1971. Joe Baxter files for constable Pet 1. Levi Bell currently holds the post.
Officials from the United States and Mexico reported no boundary issues hindering a Presidio Ojinaga international bridge. Gov. Oscar Flores said 55 miles of the Chihuahua City Ojinaga highway are paved with 66 miles drained, funded by a federal grant, and more work will start from the Ojinaga end. A loan application to the Bank of International Development seeks to finish paving the 160 mile Ojinaga Camargo highway. Attendees included representatives from Ojinayga El Paso and Texas Good Neighbor groups.
Roberto Quintinar 32, a lineman trainee for Rio Grande Electric Coop in Marfa, was accidentally killed Wednesday while working on a highline near Persimmon Gap south of Marathon. He lifted a ground wire on a disconnected line below a 69,000 volt conductor and was struck by induction current. He died at Brewster Memorial Hospital in Alpine after the 11 am incident.
