A ragged editorial rant attacks mass murder taint and media hype over avalanche deaths, Cold War fear, and devaluation. It rails at politicians and red menace while praising a reader poem The Monkey’s Viewpoint and cites Aristotle and historical currency shifts to argue against sensationalism and flawed pacifist logic.
Nevill Haynes was appointed by Alpine school board president D L Cross to fill the unexpired term of trustee Marshall Queen. Haynes, grandson of cattle rancher Kate Nevill, manages the Nevill ranch and serves as First National Bank Alpine director. He has Navy service, Bathtub School and New Mexico A&M education, plus roles in Soil Conservation and Big Bend Stock show, with plans to boost Alpine high school FFA as it expands. He is married with two children.
Cal Edwards notes Cal Rogers landed a Wright biplane in Alpine in spring 1911 completing coast to coast flight with the city’s luck. He praised West Texas weather and predicted the area would become a safe flying region. Four decades later aviators visited Alpine, using a designated landing field as more planes came to the area. District 1 of the Texas State Chiropractic Association plans its spring convention in Alpine on March 18 following a two day El Paso meeting. Dr. D A Hilton of Alpine extended the invitation. District 1 includes 14 West Texas counties.
In Brewster Jeff Davis county a 10 day person earns two top gains from a four H lamb. He will exhibit two lambs at the Big Bend Livestock show on February 10.
Tech Sergeant James C. Stovell son of Mr and Mrs John Stovell Alpine Texas has been transferred from Kelly Air Force Base San Antonio to the 1737 3 Ferrying Squadron at McClellan Air Base Sacramento California A radio mechanic in the squadron he attended Texas A and M College and worked as an electrician for Western Electrical Service before entering military service over four years ago.
The assistant county agent in training is Mr. Ray Hastings from Bosque County Texas. An ex navy man, Hastings recently completed studies at A and M College and will work with local 4 H club boys among other duties in the county office.
Tax payments in the county lag behind as of Thursday morning with only 627 settled by 9:30 am. Tax due by January 31. Voters are urged to be prepared to express themselves as elections may require decisions.
Alpine and Marathon youth livestock show officials led by H L Kokernot announce more lambs and calves to be shown than last year with about one hundred 4 H members from Alpine Marathon competing for a 441 dollar premium. The Big Bend Wool and Mohair warehouse hosts a one day program with judging at 9 and a sale by junior feeders at 2 30 pm. Local and regional officials and judges including Carter, Martyn, Faichman, and Rinbelt oversee the event with youth superintendents and ranch leaders guiding the show.
Rev Driskill, director of Evangelism for Texas Disciples of Christ, will direct the intensive visitation effort at the local Christian Church starting January 26 and running weeknights. The congregations report strong statewide success and multiple commitments in recent campaigns.
The Alpine drive chair man Wally Davis reports lagging polio fundraising as plans form for a Big Drive next Wednesday night. Mothers go out from seven to eight asking neighbors to contribute, using porch lights as signals to stop by. Fort Worth Jaycees announce a big day on January 31 at the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show. National Jaycee president Dick Kemler and state leaders will attend a parade from the courthouse to the Black Lone hotel, with a luncheon and barbecue at Pioneer Palace, plus the rodeo grand entry featuring Sul Ross College champions and Governor Shivers as possible guest.
Marvin C Kay an Alpine insurance man was elected president of the Alpine chamber of commerce at the annual meeting and banquet held Tuesday night at the Holland hotel. G C McDaniel was chosen manager and D D Thomas elected to fill Kay's unexpired term as president. McDaniel, a longtime Alpine resident, resigned as Singer sales manager to take the post.
Dr J E Wrign Texas Dept of Health sent a county mass survey report detailing 1166 adults and eight children X rayed last July. Diagnoses include definite TB carriers and suspected TB with a breakdown by race sex and diagnosis. 11 adults had definite TB and 3 males 8 females were carriers.
Rep. Dorothy Gurley was appointed January 9 to serve on five House committees in the 52nd legislature. Gurley represents this district and will join the Congressional and Legislative District Committee as well as Conservation and Reclamation, Game and Fisheries, Livestock and something related to traffic.
Alpine considers installation of traffic control lights at key highway intersections to calm fast through-traffic on US 90. Proponents cite safety for blind corners and pedestrians. opponents warn of possible delays. The Avalanche notes several suggested locations and ongoing debate as state studies consider licensing drivers.
