Alpine fans rally for the Browns White Sox exhibition set for March 30 at Kokernot Field. American Legion Post 70 backs the game to raise funds for debt payoff and building improvements while ticket prices stay the same as last year. Local weather prophets predict a cool clear day with some guests planning for varying temperatures and possible umbrellas.
Rev Duncan WePherson enters his second year at the First Christian Church of Alpine as more than 30 new members are expected this Sunday. Twenty four families have visited homes to finalize membership while divisions form under a youth and an adult chair. Evangelism director Rev Bayne Driskill trained workers who met daily for supper and instruction before door-to-door calls. 31 members had signed by Tuesday night.
The Micou estate water well near South Hill was cleaned and drilled to a little over 300 feet in hard rock. Ten inch casing reaches 260 feet. A second site east of the Santa Fe railroad station, south of the railroad, is planned with drilling to start soon on city property acquired via tax sale.
In cooperation with the local civil defense program the American Legion Auxiliary sponsors an extended blood donor list. All able bodied men and women aged 20 to 50 who reside in Alpine and are willing to give blood for emergencies should report to the Francois Medical Laboratory in the Lockhart Clinic building for a free preliminary blood test.
The Alpine Band club elected John Newell president Tack Dickson vice president Mrs Bryan Kelley secretary treasurer and Fred Williams reporter at its January 25 meeting in the high school band hall. Band director E J Van Fossan reported growth to 106 members and outlined a merit points system and a Spring contest in Monahans on April 14. Plans for a band concert in Alpine and a February 10 bingo party were scheduled with committees named. A barbecue for members and a lamb donation from Scales Brothers and Coxs supported the event.
Brewster County did not reach its March of Dimes quota while some mail contributions continued. Women collected 324.97 dollars on Wednesday night despite freezing weather. Iron lungs in business houses have yielded 230.11 dollars to date. Full county tally will be announced next week.
Boy Scouts observe their 41st anniversary with President Truman greeting twelve Scouts at the White House at noon, while governors in state capitals mark Scout Week Feb 6 to 12. The movement reports 2,750,000 members, 75,000 units, and major nationwide observances including a Jamboree reunion, films, and a national “Report to the Nation” presented to Truman. A breakfast in Washington on Feb 7 will include Cabinet and congressional members as honored guests.
The first consignment of 1951 license plates arrived last week and went on sale yesterday. Plates must be on all vehicles on state streets by April 1. The shipment includes 1790 passenger plate pairs, 650 commercial, 850 farm, 50 truck-trailer, and 156 taller plates. R. H. Murrah of Alpine bought the first passenger pair when the office opened.
W L Kingston Jr of Balmorhea died at his Hot Springs residence after months of illness. Funeral services were held January 25 at the family home in Balmothea with Rev. Douglas Crow officiating. Survivors include his wife three sons and a daughter. Two sons serve in Korea and another son Henry is recovering from battle wounds in Seattle. Also surviving are his parents Mr and Mrs W A Kingston Sr and brothers Joe and Duncan Kingston of Balmorhea.
Grand jurors for the February term of district court were announced at the courthouse this week. The list includes G. G. Lafarelle, Mike Schodts, F. C. Fulcher, F. E. Weyerts, J. N. Allebrand, D. W. Collins, Gene Thorn, A. C. Broadfoot, F. L. McCollum, W. E. Vanney, King Terry, C. F. Cox, Z. M. Decie, Carl Heiman, Keith Morrow, and Frank N. Newsom. No petit jury has been summoned yet as the court prepares to begin.
Contractor C. D. Burleson reports the third 20 mile section of State Highway 11 in Alpine Big Bend National Park is finished except for topping. Equipment moved to other sites. topping to begin in April. He also completed non topping work on a farm to market road in Presidio County and plans to start the Big Bend highway project within 10 days.
Texas Education agency study guides for high schools with under 100 pupils will be explained at a meeting of school superintendents in Alpine at 10 a.m. J W Fegar says the surveys seek community informed data, not just numbers, to align schools with current life. About 800 schools are to participate, with regional meetings to follow in Alice San Antonio Georgetown Livingston Tyler Denton Hillsboro Amarillo Lubbock and Abilene.
The cold spell brought temperatures from 51 to 18 and later five below in Alpine Valley. Snow over the region eased vegetation, while roads remained slick yet passable with cautious driving. Only slight livestock damage, few new lambs, and minor wind effects were reported as officials noted the extreme cold and a 3 below reading at 5:30 p m yesterday.
Dr. D O Jeter 71 long serving Alpine physician dies Wednesday morning at home on North Sixth Street after months of illness. Born near Wills Point Texas he studied Baylor Southwestern and moved to Alpine in 1928. Survived by widow two sisters and an adopted daughter. Funeral at First Baptist Church with Rev Glen W. Hates officiating. burial in Elm Grove Cemetery.
Brewster County reports 1388 poll taxes paid up to the final deadline. The figure, noted at the tax collector’s office, marks a solid showing for an off election year, only 196 behind the 1950 primary total.
