Members are urged to attend the annual chamber of commerce meeting at the Holland hotel next Tuesday evening where officers and directors will be elected. Tickets should be purchased by Monday so the committee may know how many to expect for the banquet.
Subscription rates to advance to 2.50 for Brewster Jeff Davis and Presidio counties and 3.00 per year outside those counties. Advertising rates will rise slightly as costs of production have surged. The move, debated for some time, reflects higher newsprint and operating expenses while preserving the paper’s local role.
National Park Service officials said the budget submitted to Congress by President Truman would allocate 285,918 to Big Bend National Park in Texas. Of that amount 69,234 funds ordinary maintenance and protective services 131,684 covers maintenance and rehabilitation of park features. A total of 85,000 funds new construction with 50,000 for Santa Helena road improvements and 35,000 for a park headquarters power system.
Sul Ross Lobos lost their third consecutive Lone Star Conference game, 73-38, as Stephen F. Austin led 45-8 at halftime. Lee Burnett topped Sul Ross with 21 points, Johnston led S F Austin with 15, and the Lobos travel to Howard Payne for two games this week while Dr. L W Dumas plans to remain in Alpine if not recalled to service.
Sixteen men reported from the Fort Bliss area for physical examinations and were accepted for service. The district Selective Service office listed the names of those accepted and noted eight others who transferred from other boards. Fourteen men from the four county area will be inducted February 7, with additional pre-induction calls on January 30 and February 20. The notice also reports five M Ds two dentists and two veterinarians registering this week.
Alpine barber shops announce price increases effective tomorrow due to a near doubling of barber supply costs in the past 90 days. Owners Rudy Krenek and Bill Lane say they are among the last to raise prices locally and regret having to do so to serve customers.
Sunday evening favorite hymn sing at 7 30 p m led by Mr Johnny Prude invites all to choose hymns with special choir music and guest soloists. Rev Austin H Dillon preaches at 10 51 morning service on Frustated Christians with cordial invitation to attend.
Work on Brewster county courthouse repairs continues with upstairs renovations due to finish by the February district court term on Feb. 12. Downstairs plaster removal also proceeds as Ralph W. Peters leads the crew. In Terlingua area, quicksilver inquiries surge as prices rise to 158 per 76 pounds, reviving mining prospects and suggesting substantial cinnabar ore beneath the district could be profitably mined at current levels.

Alpine and Centennial squads posted wins across volleyball and basketball as the Big Bend Junior Conference hits mid season. Centennial small and Pee Wee teams posted solid results while Alpine’s big girls and Pee Wee squads won key games. Fort Davis and Anderson Davis figures feature in multiple results as the league sights a February 24 finish and district tournament to follow.
The Soylaid plant sits east of the Southern Pacific stock pens where mineral soil from southern Seawater county deposits is processed for distribution.
The March of Dimes campaign opens in Fort Davis and Jeff Davis County with S C Bouchette chairing. Residents are urged to give generously to cover a prior polio case costing 1294.09 and close a 829.10 deficit. funds will strengthen the county drive and hospital care.
Alpine community mobilizes for polio drive led by Wally Davis and M C Kay. Mothers of Alpine plan a porch light brigade on January 31, urging residents to contribute during the March of Dimes campaign. Local businesses participate with iron lungs, coffee-money donations, and Granada Theatre audience drives to boost receipts.
John G. Prude, executive secretary of the Sul Ross Ex-Student Association, will participate in the District IV conference of the American Alumni council at Rice Institute from Thursday the 18th to Saturday the 20th. About 45 delegates from Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas will attend with speakers including Rice Institute president W. O’Houston and Texas A&M director E. E. McQuillen. The next national council meet is planned for July 1951 at French Lick Indiana, where Prude hopes to attend, with Sul Ross members proud to have him represent them.
The Sportsman's Club will hold its semi annual meeting on Wednesday February 7 at p.m. in the county courthouse district courtroom. Officers will be elected and other business will be discussed. A Game Dept film will be shown. Members are urged to attend and ensure poll tax and property tax are paid before the January 31 deadline.
Seylaid Co. labels a new soil builder industry centered near Alpine Texas. With J R Pattee overseeing production, the plant ships 669 tons of mineral soil to multiple states, sold through Lone Star Chemical Car. The company leases 2000 acres, employs 26 workers, and claims the soil boosts tree and crop vitality without being a fertilizer.
