Alpine Chamber Names Major C C Committees for 1958

The Alpine Chamber of Commerce held its initial 1958 officers and board meeting Tuesday naming auding budget and finance committee members Forrest Walker Jack Stowell and Dict Rogers. Other committees include building grounds Levin Davis Norman Beard and Kenneth Stucke and an expanded congressional action committee with many names.

Watchman Injured as Train Hits Police Car

A city police car was demolished when struck by an eastbound freight train at the Brewster County Motor Co crossing at 8 45 p m Tuesday. Watchman Rackley escaped serious injury with a head cut but no fractures after the collision with a passenger train entering from the east and the freight train.

Marathon School Upgrade Under Way With New Toilets

Builders begin a masonry extension at Hidalgo Ward School in Marathon to install modern toilet facilities. The project, budgeted at about HOW, aims to finish within 40 days per Toy Whiteside. Also, the Loop Road residence for Mrs Meriwether was completed last week by Whiteside Lumber Co.

Legion Sponsors Tub of Dimes for March of Dimes Drive

American Legion Big Bend Post 79 begins a Tub of Dimes in front of the post office at 7 30 a m on Saturday to support the annual March of Dimes campaign. The 40 and 8 train will visit the post office in the afternoon and donors may use parking meter funds in the tub.

Isbell Taken By Death In Texas

Funeral services for B D Isbell known as Shorty were held in San Angelo and Alpine Texas with burial in Fairmount Cemetery. He died of a heart attack at home on Saturday morning. He owned Isbell's Garage on North Mth Street and had resided in Alpine about 20 years. He was born in Falkville Alabama. Survivors include his mother Mes To Tabell of Decatur Alabama five sisters and a brother. Funeral services were also held in Alpine at the First Christian Church under Livingston's direction.

Literary Track Meet Plans Set by 7A District

Alpine High School hosts a planning meeting with 22 representatives from Alpine Fabens Marfa Sanderson Iraan and Big Lake for a spring University League track and literary meet. Dates listed include March 21 one act play April 11 literary meet April 12 events at Sul Ross and Sul Reas with a track meet at Kaan. A fuller report will appear in next week's Avalanche.

Bien Venido motel expansion begins on Holland Avenue

Reconstruction of Motel Bien Venido starts Monday as owners Mrs. Fills McBride and Mr. and Mrs. H J McBride announce a project valued over 140000 dollars. The 29 unit motel will grow to 41 units with two stories and a U shape, featuring a central 20 by 45 foot heated pool and upgraded amenities. The John G Elliott Construction Co of San Angelo holds the contract. architect is Max B Lovett of San Angelo.

Alpine High Girls Invite Opens Friday Tourney Card

Alpine High School hosts the fifth High School Girls Invitational Basketball Tourney in the Alpine High Gym with four preliminary games Friday led by Presidio vs Grandfalls at 3 p.m. and Alpine vs Van Horn at 8:30 p.m. Fort Davis, Balmorhea, Grandfalls and Sanderson compete, trophies and 10 individual honors are planned, and all sessions charge 50 cents adults and 10 cents for grade school children.

Brewster County Poll Tax Sales Lag Shown

Brewster County lags in poll tax sales with only 686 of the 700 needed issued by Wednesday afternoon and about six exemptions noted. Chief Deputy Vic Heil of the tax collector's office said the 1966 total must reach 700 by January, comparing to 1957’s 119 for an off year.
